Position Summary


The Weddington Farm Summer Unpaid Intern will be committed to hands-on learning in the following areas listed out below. Additionally, the Summer Intern would assist in planning and executing various environmental activities and educational programs. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the outdoors and a commitment to learning on the Farm. The individual will report to the Director of Educational Programming (DOE), Weddington Farm.


 


As an Unpaid Intern and Student, the employer and intern understand the following:



  1. There is no expectation of compensation.

  2. The internship is conducted without entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship.

  3. The internship’s duration is limited to the period in which the internship provides the intern with beneficial learning.

  4. The internship aims at providing hands-on education and training as would be given in an educational environment.

  5. The internship aims at creating and accommodating the intern’s educational interests and academic commitments.


 


Key Focus areas of Internship Program:


 


 


Hospitality, Agritourism & Education



  • Hospitality: Gain knowledge on the hospitality side of agriculture through maintaining community connections and planning, organizing, facilitating, and executing events.

  • Agritourism: Work with the education team to develop programs and curriculum for children, high school students, and adults. Help facilitate summer farm camp, tours for summer camp groups and advertising upcoming programs.

  • Education & Marketing: Work alongside the education team to develop strategic marketing plans, create educational content, design branded materials.


 


Agriculture/Greenhouse


 



  • Spend time working on the farm maintaining plant beds, harvesting vegetables, and weeding as needed. Learn about a plant nursery, plant propagation, plant production, harvesting and packaging leafy greens and herbs, food safety, and marketing products. Support Summer Farmers Market(s) and volunteerism days as needed.


 


Livestock



  • Complete daily livestock chores. Work with team members to manage poultry, goats and alpacas.


 


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to deliver exceptional customer experience

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with a wide variety of people (staff, members, visiting guests) and circumstances in a professional manner

  • Must be comfortable facilitating other recreational opportunities


 


Minimum Qualifications



  • Working towards a degree in agriculture, environmental science, outdoor recreation preferred or other relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Passion and high energy to learn new skills and assist Weddington Farm grow

  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and focused on the guest experience

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to stay focused while being flexible with changing schedules or farm needs

  • A solution-oriented mindset when faced with challenges

  • Willingness to receive feedback, grow personally and professionally, and develop new skills


 


Additional Requirements



  • Valid Driver's License

  • First aid/CPR certifications preferred
