City Manager’s Office Intern – Discover the Big Picture of Local Government

The City of Newport is launching a new and exciting internship with the City Manager’s Office, designed for individuals interested in public administration, policy, city planning, or leadership in the public sector.

This internship is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the highest level of city operations. The Intern will work directly with Nina Vetter, City Manager, assisting with research, special projects, and the day-to-day functions that keep local government running smoothly.

About the Temporary, Summer Internship:
The intern will be immersed in the inner workings of city leadership - attending meetings, contributing to initiatives, and supporting projects that impact the entire community. This is an ideal role for someone who wants a behind-the-scenes look at policy, planning, and public service.

 What You May Do:

  • Conduct research and prepare briefings for upcoming Council or committee meetings
  • Help prepare presentations and talking points for internal and external use
  • Support policy and project tracking, including data collection and report drafting
  • Participate in interdepartmental projects and strategic planning sessions
  • Assist with administrative tasks and other duties as assigned
 Possible Exposure & Learning Opportunities:
  • Attend City Council, Planning Commission, and/or other committee meetings
  • Learn about the budget process, policy development, and community priorities
  • Gain exposure to interdepartmental coordination and public service delivery
  • Understand the challenges and rewards of municipal leadership

 Work Hours and Location
  • Primarily office-based with occasional attendance at public meetings or events
  • May include occasional evening hours based on meeting schedules

Position Duties

 Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • At least 18 years of age

  • High school graduate (or GED) enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university

  • Interest in public administration, political science, urban planning, communications, or a related field

  • Curious, organized, and professional

  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills

  • Comfortable handling confidential information

  • Proficient with software technology

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team

Minimum Qualifications

  • Office related tasks; some lifting (up to 25 lbs.) may be required
