Job Description

About the Department

The Electrician/Journeyman shall report to the Associate Vice President for Operations and Special Projects. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for the correct establishment of the Campus electrical systems; coordinates, monitors, and inspects the work activities of any assigned project staff.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains emergency lighting systems, phone and electrical systems, fire alarm and clock systems, high and low voltage systems, data/voice/fiber optics cable, facilities management systems, motors, transformers, generators, lights, circuits, wiring, and other electrical system equipment and components in compliance with electrical codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Operates a variety of electrical testing equipment in locating and determining types of electrical malfunctions; studies/reviews plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs and/or installations.
  • Performs routine building preventive maintenance schedules; makes routine tests and inspections of all critical electrical systems, and records all information for planning.
  • Takes calls for problems that arise; works to correct issues. 
  • Date tags all replaced bulbs and equipment for the record of their life of operation.
  • Prepares material list for assigned projects.
  • Reports any defective or faulty equipment immediately and takes appropriate action to repair/replace.
  • May serve on various campus committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required. 
  • Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College

Position Duties

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of electrical apprenticeship; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Journeyman Electrician certificate. 
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico or Texas driver’s license

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of construction plans, blueprints and electrical specifications sufficient to interpret, modify and follow them to complete the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical tools and equipment, safety standards and procedures, sufficient to perform work efficiently and safely.
  • Knowledge of math sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.
  • Skill in installation, repair, and maintenance of all systems and assignments common to the trade.
  • Skill in leading the work activities of self and other. 
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public.
  • Ability to prioritize projects, coordinate multiple requests, and adhere to deadlines. 
  • Ability to maintain electrical project records of time and materials sufficient to report daily, weekly, and monthly progress of electrical projects.
  • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
  • Must maintain New Mexico Journeyman Electrical license.
  • Positions may require the ability to safely move up to 50 pounds, work on heights of 40 feet, drive a forklift, scissor lift, or other related equipment.
