The Department of Computational and Physical Sciences at Carroll University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Chemistry at the Assistant Professor rank, beginning Fall 2026. This is a 9-month appointment with the opportunity for reappointment. This tenure track position is a retirement replacement and includes research expectations (60% teaching / 20% service / 20% research).
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in physical chemistry.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a documented record of excellence in teaching and the ability to engage under-represented students in the study of chemistry.
- Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of scholarship resulting in publication.
- Preference will be given to candidates whose research interests can be adapted for a primarily undergraduate institution.
- The successful candidate will be a broadly trained chemist with expertise and research experience in physical chemistry. Additional expertise in inorganic chemistry or biochemistry would be beneficial.
Responsibilities:
- Primary teaching responsibilities will be in physical chemistry: quantum (2cr), thermodynamics (2cr), kinetics (2cr), and spectroscopy (2cr). The standard teaching load is 4x4 credit lectures and 3x3 hour labs per academic year (24 credit hours), or equivalent.
- The candidate will also contribute to teaching in the general chemistry sequence and/or other upper-level chemistry courses in the candidate’s area of expertise.
- Teaching opportunities in the University’s general education curriculum, which includes cross-cultural course (CCE300) and general distribution courses, are possible.
- Primary scholarship responsibilities involve articulating and implementing a sustainable research program that engages undergraduate students and results in scholarly presentations and publications.
- Primary service responsibilities include advising, curriculum development, course coordination, possible grant writing, and other service to the Chemistry program and the University.
Rank and Salary:
- Assistant Professor (60% teaching / 20% scholarship / 20% service).
- This position is eligible for tenure and promotion.
- Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
The Department:
- The Chemistry Program has six faculty members and is housed within the Department of Computational and Physical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- The program supports approximately 75 undergraduate majors in chemistry and biochemistry.
- Faculty in the department are active in conducting research, leading study abroad programs, and coordinating internships.
- The Department of Computational and Physical Sciences has a full-time laboratory coordinator. Our laboratory teaching and research facilities were renovated in 2016.
