The Center for Geospatial Analysis (CGA) employs multiple Fellows for a 12-month period to help members of the William & Mary community use geospatial technologies and participate in ongoing research and projects.Fellows support various grants, student research, and educational endeavors that are conducted by the Center for Geospatial Analysis.
Job Description:
CGA Fellows help members of the William & Mary community use geospatial technologies and participate in ongoing research and projects. Primary responsibilities of the Fellows include GIS/Geospatial Work (40%), Teaching, Research, Academic Support (40%), Administrative duties (10%), and Professional Development (10%).
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required in a GIS related discipline (e.g. Geography, GIS, Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, and others), or an equivalent combination of education, training, coursework, and/or experience indicating possession of preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of GIS is necessary, with additional knowledge of remote sensing, programming, databases, and/or GPS a plus.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, and in collaboration with team members to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, utilizing exceptional communication and presentation skills, and to work effectively with a diverse population of research faculty, staff, and students.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience/skills in conducting research projects with a high-level of attention to detail and accuracy.
Proven skills in writing, demonstrating a high-level of analysis and critical thinking.
Prior higher education work experience in an academic setting or administrative unit performing complex work assignments.
Conditions of Employment
This 12-month position begins August 3, 2026.
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
This position provides an opportunity for research and work experience before pursuing a career or obtaining a higher degree.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; W&M Center for Geospatial Analysis will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Compensation: $21.50 per hour
Employment term: Monday, August 3, 2026 through Friday, July 30, 2027

Job Duties
40% - Academic Support
Teaching/Partnership/Research Support (e.g. StoryMap Demos, GIS Course help).
Supervise and assist students doing research, give outreach demos, and provide necessary instruction on current GIS methods.
Assist Faculty/Staff in geospatial research.
40% - GIS Work
Research, grant and contract support; maintain existing partnerships and projects.
Supervise and mentor undergraduate students as they conduct geospatial research.
10% - Support of Daily CGA Operations
Plan, post and respond to CGA social media.
Maintain, edit, and update CGA website.
Collaboratively plan and host speakers and events.
Assist in the day-to-day operations of the CGA.
10% - Professional Development
Pursue and develop professional geospatial skills throughout the Fellowship. This includes additional training opportunities, presentations, external opportunities, as possible. Quarterly reflection on professional and technical growth during the Fellowship will be required.
