About The Role
Assists teachers in district classrooms for the cognitively impaired and/or physically impaired by performing a variety of duties designed to carry out individual student education programs and positive behavioral support.
- Assists in daily classroom routines and facilitates students participation in all activities including but not limited to: self-care, mobility, ambulation, defined health procedures, and swimming.
- Implements classroom and/or individual student behavior intervention strategies under the direction of classroom teachers.
- May operate various lifts, instructional or adaptive equipment and assistive technology devices.
About You
- High school graduate or GED recipient.
- Prefer 2 years successful experience as a paraprofessional in a program for youth with physical and/or cognitive impairments or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrates continuous learning as it relates to instructional, behavioral and therapeutic interventions for assigned students.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Paraprofessional, Programs for Cognitive and/or Physically Impaired
DEPARTMENT: Special Education
REPORT TO: Program Supervisor
SUMMARY: Assists teachers in district classrooms for the cognitively impaired and/or
physically impaired by performing a variety of duties designed to carry
out individual student education programs and positive behavioral support.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assists in daily classroom routines and facilitates students participation in all activities
including but not limited to: self-care, mobility, ambulation, defined health procedures,
and swimming.
• Implements classroom and/or individual student behavior intervention strategies under
the direction of classroom teachers.
• May operate various lifts, instructional or adaptive equipment and assistive technology
devices.
• Collects information on and summarizes student progress toward achievement of IEP
goals/objectives and/or behavior intervention plans under the direction of classroom
teachers.
• Supervises and monitors students daily during instructional and non-structured periods.
• Assists in the development, maintenance and adaptation of instructional materials under
the direction of classroom teachers.
• Records attendance, maintains records, and performs other clerical tasks under the
direction of classroom teachers.
• May provide job coaching and/or instructional support to students participating in
community-based vocational programs.
• Participates in building level activities, staff meetings, student staffings, program
meetings, inservice activities, or other meetings as determined necessary by classroom
teachers or the supervising special education administrator.
• Assumes other duties and responsibilities as assigned by classroom teachers or the
supervising special education administrator.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students under teacher direction within school or community based instructional
settings.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• High school graduate or GED recipient.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, comprehend multi-step instructions and written correspondence. Ability to
communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar
graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding and learned skills while interacting with students
and adults. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situations. Ability to generalize concepts/skills learned in one situation and apply those
concepts/skills to new situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work with students who have severe disabilities. Ability to develop effective working
relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with
awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Self-directedness and
initiative when given a variety of tasks and responsibilities. Demonstrate understanding of
student and family confidentiality.
PHYSICIAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands
and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear. The employee is
occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or
balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employees must regularly lift 50 lbs and
push/pull up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, and peripheral vision. The employee needs to be to tell where a sound is coming
from and hear in a noisy environment. The employee must possess physical abilities sufficient to
employ physical intervention strategies when necessary, i.e. non-violent crisis intervention
techniques.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be part of a team responsible for
safety, well-being and work output. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate. The
employee may be exposed to infection or aggressive behavior from students at a greater risk than
the average person.
