Position Duties

Position Summary

Under occasional supervision, performs skilled technical work in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of water filtration equipment and systems to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous production of potable water. Work includes monitoring water quality, adjusting chemical treatments, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

Essential Functions

The following duties are representative of the position. Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Operates, monitors, and maintains water treatment plant equipment and systems. 
  • Monitors water quality and flow; performs chemical adjustments to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and quality expectations. 
  • Collects and analyzes water samples; performs routine laboratory testing and records results. 
  • Operates and maintains pumps, motors, meters, chemical feed systems, generators, and related equipment. 
  • Performs filter backwashing, sludge management, and general plant maintenance. 
  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory and plant equipment. 
  • Receives, handles, and stocks chemicals and supplies in accordance with safety procedures. 
  • Prepares and maintains required operational logs, reports, and regulatory documentation. 
  • Responds to customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints professionally. 
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work environment. 
  • Responds to emergencies and is subject to call-back as needed. 
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA and SCDHEC standards. 
  • Supports overall Public Works operations, including the maintenance of a safe and reliable water supply. 
  • Performs general maintenance and housekeeping duties. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in water treatment operations or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License. 
  • Must possess and maintain a Class C Water Treatment Operator Certification issued by SCDHEC. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Water treatment processes, equipment, and laboratory procedures. 
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. 
  • Chemical handling, storage, and safety procedures. 
  • Occupational hazards and safety practices of water treatment operations. 
  • Basic computer and recordkeeping practices. 

Skills in:

  • Operating and maintaining technical equipment and instruments. 
  • Conducting laboratory tests and interpreting results. 
  • Time management, organization, and prioritization. 
  • Providing effective customer service and communication. 

Ability to:

  • Monitor and evaluate water quality and system performance. 
  • Interpret technical manuals, reports, and regulations. 
  • Perform mathematical calculations, including percentages and basic algebra. 
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
  • Work independently with limited supervision. 
  • Respond effectively in emergency situations. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism. 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, and use hands to operate tools and equipment. 
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. 
  • Requires manual dexterity and coordination to operate plant and laboratory equipment. 
  • Ability to distinguish colors and read gauges and instruments accurately. 
  • Must be able to wear respiratory protection equipment as required. 

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a plant, laboratory, office, and outdoor environments. 
  • Exposure to weather conditions, chemicals, noise, and mechanical hazards. 
  • Position is subject to emergency call-back. 
  • Classified as a safety-sensitive position and subject to random drug testing.

Supervisory Exercised

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 

Supervision Received

Reports to the Water Filtration Division Manager, but is expected to work and cooperate with other supervisory personnel, department directors, other division supervisors, and other department and/or city-wide personnel.
