FLSA Status:        Non-Exempt


 


PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide high-quality interpretation and translation to enhance effective communication between KCPS and English Learner (EL) students and their families. Support EL students and their families to connect to school and community resources via phone, written communication, home visits, and parent meetings. Assist in planning and facilitating parent engagement activities to promote academic success.


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Engage with parents through in-person meetings, phone calls, written communication or home visits to develop an ongoing partnership between the home and school.

  • Communicate to parents and students the school requirements, expectations and available programs and services to promote student success.

  • Support enrollment, screening and placement of EL students as well as family education orientations.

  • Interpret for district personnel, students and families.

  • Provide translation for MAP and EOC testing, SPED meetings and other assessments as needed.

  • Translate District, school and teacher documents.

  • Coordinate with other KCPS departments and external community partners for the benefit of EL students and families.

  • Attend parent meetings and family engagement activities both during and after normal work hours.

  • Support and collaborate with school staff by visiting assigned schools regularly, meetings, phone and email.

  • Assist with providing professional development about culture, language and other areas of knowledge.

  • Document services provided as required.

  • Attend and participate in scheduled professional development.

  • Other duties as assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None


 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Oral and written fluency in English and in Spanish. 


  • 60 college hours or approximately 2 years of applicable work experience. This may include any work experience in PreK-12 education, interpreting and translating, community services and engagement, or other parent/ family services.



  • Exceptional interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a group.

  • Basic computer and internet navigation skills including familiarity with Outlook, Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.

  • Must have reliable transportation to travel between schools, students’ homes and community agencies.


 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • College degree in Education, Communication, Social Work, Multicultural Studies or Language.

  • Knowledge of community resources and organizations in the KCPS area.
