DESCRIPTION
The Radio Communications Technician supports the installation, programming, maintenance, and repair of two-way radio communication systems used across the school system. This position ensures that communication equipment is functional, reliable, and available to support daily operations and emergency response. The role includes troubleshooting technical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and assisting with system upgrades to maintain consistent performance of radio communications. The technician conducts site visits to schools and facilities to support equipment functionality, coverage, and user needs. This position works in coordination with the Office of Safety and Security to support radio distribution, programming, inventory management, and system documentation. A key responsibility is to ensure that communication systems remain operational and effective during both routine activities and emergency situations, minimizing downtime and supporting timely response. This position aligns with the HCPSS mission by supporting a safe and secure learning environment through reliable communication systems that enable coordination, responsiveness, and operational continuity across all schools and offices.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and resolves issues with two-way radio equipment and communication systems to ensure reliable daily operations and emergency readiness.
Programs, configures, and deploys radio equipment, including updating frequencies, talkgroups, and system settings to meet operational needs.
Performs field service work by visiting schools and facilities to install, test, and verify radio functionality, coverage, and system performance.
Maintains accurate inventory of radio equipment, including tracking assignments, replacements, and availability of accessories such as batteries and antennas.
Conducts preventative maintenance, firmware updates, and routine system checks to ensure equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
Coordinates with staff and departments to assess communication needs, provide technical support, and ensure proper use of radio equipment.
Documents system configurations, service activities, and changes to maintain accurate records and support ongoing system management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all of the following qualifications listed below to be considered for the vacancy. Use the application, cover letter, and resume to specifically address each qualification.
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 2 years of experience working with two-way radio systems, electronics, telecommunications, or a related technical field.
Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing technical or electronic equipment.
Experience working independently to resolve issues in a timely manner.
Experience using basic tools, software, or equipment to support technical installations or repairs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's degree in electronics, telecommunications, information technology, or a related field preferred.
Relevant technical certifications (e.g., FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License, manufacturer certifications such as Motorola, or equivalent) may be substituted for formal education.
Experience with land mobile radio (LMR) systems, including programming and maintenance.
Experience with Motorola radio platforms (e.g., APX, MOTOTRBO) or similar systems Experience performing field service work, including site visits, installations, or equipment testing Experience supporting public safety, school systems, or government operations.
Experience managing or tracking equipment inventory and assignments.
Experience performing preventative maintenance and system updates.
Experience documenting technical work, configurations, or system changes
SALARY
$16.00-$27.00 per hour
