Secondary Substitute Job Description
Job Summary:
The Secondary School Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instructional support and maintaining continuity of learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher for grades 7–12. This role involves implementing lesson plans, managing classroom behavior, and supporting student learning across various academic subjects in a structured secondary school environment.
Duties:
The following list of duties may be required, but is not an inclusive list:
- Be available to substitute teach a minimum of 4 days per month during the school year (approximately 36 days annually).
- Accept assignments in advance when possible; same-day assignments may be required due to unexpected absences.
- Arrive prepared to follow lesson plans and maintain instructional momentum in a variety of subject areas.
- Adapt to different classrooms, schedules (including block schedules), and teaching styles as needed.
- Implement lesson plans and instructional materials left by the regular teacher across subject areas.
- Deliver instruction to secondary students using clear communication and appropriate instructional strategies.
- Maintain a structured, respectful, and academically focused classroom environment.
- Take attendance and maintain accurate classroom records as required.
- Monitor and manage student behavior in accordance with school policies and classroom expectations.
- Supervise students during class transitions, hall duty, lunch periods, or study halls as assigned.
- Address minor academic or behavioral concerns and escalate concerns to administration when appropriate.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times.
- Provide basic feedback to the regular teacher regarding student progress, behavior, and completed work.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Collaborate with administration and staff to ensure continuity of instruction.
- Attend meetings or trainings when applicable.
