Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

This position supports the production of SSAB steel by performing tasks to facilitate the preparation and testing of steel samples for verification of conformance to customer specifications. The position follows standard operation procedures and practices safe work habits to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible. This position requires both working in an operational, hands-on capacity as well as working in a maintenance capacity and administrative duties in the assigned laboratory. The position is required to cross train and learn all work assignments in the laboratory and become competent in each.   This position requires working on rotating swing shifts.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn and follow the standard operating procedures and safe operating practices (JSA/SOP)
  • Operate testing equipment (tensile, charpy, bend)
  • Operate machine equipment (CNC machine centers)
  • Operate sample preparation equipment (vertical, horizontal band saws)
  • Prepare and analyze all steel samples using lab equipment
  • Accurately report testing information within a timely manner
  • Receive test coupons, prepare test specimens, perform required tests
  • Verify, document and enter data into the forms, tracking system and spreadsheets
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment including validation checks
  • Troubleshooting to assist in returning faulty equipment to operational status
  • Regular and reliable attendance

 

QUALIFICATIONS – Education, Experience and Competencies

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE 

Preferred Education:

  • Associates or Bachelors degree with a science major, such as chemistry

Required Experience:

  • Experience with computers (basic operation and/or troubleshooting)
  • Detail oriented (accuracy)
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to handle fast pace with low margin for error
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interpret industry specifications (ASTM/EN/API/ABS/CSA)

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous applied technology experience with CNC machining, cutting and milling equipment

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee will frequently be required to:

  • Sit, walk, stand – alternating throughout 12 hour shift
  • Reach and twist at waist/desk level
  • Use both hands for handling, grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures
  • Lift and move up to 10 pounds
  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Reach above shoulder level and below waist level
  • Balance, stoop, kneel or crouch and climb stairs

The position requires the following vision, talking and hearing capabilities:

  • Vision at near, mid, and far range
  • Peripheral vision and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Communicating (talking and hearing) in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings

The employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:

  • Desktop computer
  • Lab Analytical Equipment
  • Multimeter
  • Database

The employee will work in the following conditions:

  • Indoors
  • Amid noise
  • Around equipment in motion
  • Amid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards
  • While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards

 

POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position is full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtime
  • Position works 12 hours a day, rotating swing shifts to include both days, nights and weekends
  • Onsite presence required
