We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Chief Operating Officer (Hybrid) on our Executive Office team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office requiring 3 days a week in the office.
The COO will be a key leader of the AMA, the premier national organization focused on advancing the art and science of medicine, the betterment of public health, and the success of physicians throughout their medical life. The COO will also be a key member of the senior executive team reporting to the CEO. S/he will have a broad responsibility in coordination with other senior executives to advance the effectiveness and efficiency of all AMA operations and to contribute to overall enterprise strategic decision making and direction.
In this role, the COO will oversee critical business, infrastructure and administrative functions including Health Solutions, AMA Insurance, Enterprise Communications, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Corporate Services. Health Solutions and AMA Insurance provide the majority of revenue that support the operations of the AMA. Enterprise Communications, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Corporate Services are critical in providing the infrastructure needed to support the enterprise.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Health Solutions is the steward of three key AMA data assets including Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), 100 years of Physician Data (Masterfile), and the Guides to Permanent Impairment. In 2022, Health Solutions will generate >$300M of revenue in 2022, with >80% Contribution Margin. Health Solutions is responsible for ensuring the continued relevance, protection and growth of our data assets.
- AMA Insurance offers an array of insurance products specifically designed to help physicians protect their assets at every stage of their life - from medical school to retirement. Leveraging the power of America’s physicians, they negotiate high-quality, valuable coverage (including life, disability, Medicare supplement, etc.) from top-rated insurance companies, while also delivering an excellent customer experience, providing exclusive benefits and privileges to AMA members, and providing financial earnings (as a for-profit subsidiary) to the AMA, to help support AMA’s mission efforts.
- Enterprise Communications oversees media relations, leadership communications, employee communications and the AMA Enterprise Social Responsibility program.
- Information Technology is responsible for maintaining the technology infrastructure that supports all AMA Business Units, as well as playing a significant role in the annual budgeting and planning process. Within IT, the Enterprise Data Program office is responsible for regulatory compliance and the IT Application Development organization supports the applications used to run the business and manage strategic IT business projects.
- Human Resources and Corporate Services are key strategic partners to the AMA, providing guidance and support to each business unit’s priorities and initiatives. Human Resources and Corporate Services play a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the foundations necessary to support AMA’s long-term sustainability, growth, and success by creating and sustaining a climate conducive for staff to safely operate and conduct business.

KEY RESPOSIBILITIES
- The COO will have responsibilities which include: Provide operational and strategic leadership to noted leaders and functional areas which
advance the mission of the AMA in a fiscally responsible and compliant manner. - Engage in the proactive development, communication and execution of the strategic direction and long-term plans in a high-quality manner.
- Maintain a highly visible presence, interacting constantly with key internal and external stakeholders to inform and advise them of strategies, current healthcare trends, legislation, and activities.
- Delivering strong financial and operating results across the AMA’s portfolio.
CANDIDATE PROFILE:
The successful candidate will be a high integrity, financially successful, and well-respected executive level business leader. S/he will have strong business acumen and corporate discipline with an ability to create high performing teams, successfully execute the strategy, mitigate risks and balance competing priorities across the enterprise.
The COO will present him/herself as a credible thought leader, tough-minded operator and inspirational teammate and leader. The COO will have commercial instincts and an external-facing orientation with the ability to grow strategic relationships.
