Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director - Tax leads the company’s tax function and is responsible for all federal and state income tax compliance, the tax balance sheet and income statement, and the quarterly and annual tax provision under ASC 740, including related financial statement disclosures. This role oversees indirect taxes such as state and local tax requirements involving property taxes, sales tax, use tax and excise tax matters. The Director – Tax also supports operational and transactional tax issues and develops and implements tax planning and minimization strategies. The Director -Tax reports to the Senior Vice President – Chief Accounting Officer in the Denver office. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage federal and state income tax compliance, including management of data gathering and review and preparation of K-1 statements in a timely manner.
  • Manage all state and local tax filings, including property, sales and use tax and excise taxes.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Effectively communicate complex tax concepts to non-tax professionals, including the executive team.
  • Coordinate professional services, as needed.
  • Prepare and/or manage preparation of depletion and depreciation calculations, including systems improvement and interface.
  • Develop, research, and document tax issues, federal and state.
  • Support corporate M&A activities, manage or assist with tax due diligence, assist in integrating tax issues with accounting for acquisitions, divestitures, and corporate restructurings. 
  • Oversee and ensure accurate quarterly and annual tax provision under ASC 740, including tax calculations, journal entries, financial statement disclosures and tax account reconciliations, as necessary.
  • Manage income tax audits, direct responses to tax audits, inquiries, and notices, coordinating with external advisors as necessary.
  • Manage property tax review, protest, and accounting requirements.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of tax database, including documentation of technical tax positions taken and alternatives considered.
  • Research and support tax related matters as necessary to support other business functions of the company
  • Work with Treasury and FP&A group to integrate necessary tax related items into budget and forecast.
  • Develop and execute tax planning initiatives to optimize the company’s effective tax rate and cash tax position.
  • Assist in maintenance of and procedures to comply with requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley Rule 404.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Drive continuous improvement in tax processes, systems and documentation to increase accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of direct reports, providing regular feedback and performance evaluations. 
  • Delegate tasks effectively and ensure timely completion of team deliverables. 
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and workload distribution within the team.  
  • Support employee development through coaching, training, and career growth opportunities. 
  • Address performance issues and implement corrective actions when necessary. 
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members. 
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment aligned with company values.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and internal controls.
