Job Summary:
The RN Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily clinical operations of a designated short-term care unit within a skilled nursing facility. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care in accordance with all state and federal regulations, facility policies, and best practices. The Unit Manager supervises nursing staff, coordinates interdisciplinary care, supports resident care planning, and promotes a safe, person-centered environment for short-term residents.
Key Responsibilities / Job Duties:
Supervise and manage nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs) on the assigned short-term/ventilator care unit.
Coordinate and participate in resident care planning, including MDS assessments and care conferences.
Monitor resident conditions and oversee care delivery to ensure compliance with care plans and clinical standards.
Provide clinical guidance and support to nursing staff to ensure quality and continuity of care.
Conduct daily rounds to assess resident care, staff performance, and unit needs.
Review and ensure accuracy of documentation and electronic medical records.
Manage admissions, transfers, and discharges for ventilator/short-term residents.
Communicate effectively with physicians, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
Monitor infection control practices and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
Address and resolve resident, family, and staff concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits to enhance resident outcomes.
Ensure adequate staffing levels and assist with scheduling as needed.
Provide orientation and ongoing education to new and existing staff.
Uphold compliance with facility policies, state and federal regulations, and professional standards.
Education Requirements
· Must be a currently licensed RN in good standing with the state board of nursing.
· CPR certification required.
Qualifications:
· Minimum of 2 years nursing experience in a short-term care or rehabilitation setting.
· Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and residents' families.
· Must be able to take call on rotation
· Basic computer proficiency and documentation skills.
Work Conditions:
Work is performed in a skilled nursing facility setting, with potential exposure to bodily fluids, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
Includes weekends and holidays as needed.
Frequent interaction with residents, staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
May require occasional evening or weekend hours, particularly during outbreaks, emergencies, or survey preparation.
Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for infection control purposes.
May be required to lift and carry objects over 10 lbs.
Must be able to assist with or maneuver equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, and Hoyer lifts
Frequent walking, standing, and occasional bending or kneeling may be necessary when conducting audits or inspections throughout the facility.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE as required and lift educational materials or small equipment.
Tasks assigned to this position may involve potential and/or direct exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals.
