Job Description

The Research Assistant engages in a summer long research project in a laboratory at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. This position involves conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, maintaining lab equipment, and assisting with administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic research environment. At the conclusion of the summer, the research assistant will present their work at a poster presentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experiments following established protocols and procedures.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all research activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of research reports, manuscripts, and possibly grant applications.
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and other laboratory materials.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning.
  • Track laboratory supplies and inventory used.
  • Comply with institutional safety protocols and biosafety regulations.
  • Assist in training new lab personnel and students.
  • Participate in lab meetings, seminars, and presentations.
  • Perform administrative duties such as organizing research files, scheduling experiments, and handling correspondence related to research projects.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program and maintaining a GPA of 3.2.
  • Experience: Prior research experience in a laboratory setting is preferred but not required. Experience with molecular biology, cell culture, or animal models is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as PCR, Western blotting, microscopy, and data analysis software.
  • Soft Skills: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent organizational and time-management abilities, and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Must be comfortable handling biological samples and working with laboratory animals if required

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a laboratory setting with potential exposure to biohazards and chemicals.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend work depending on research needs.
  • Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, using fine motor skills for experiments, and occasionally lifting lab equipment or supplies
