Position Summary
The Self-Pay Collector is responsible for managing patient accounts with outstanding self-pay balances after insurance has processed or when no insurance coverage exists. This position ensures timely collection of patient responsibility amounts, provides excellent customer service, educates patients on their bills, offers financial assistance options, and helps patients set up appropriate payment arrangements consistent with hospital policy.

Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Proof of highest level of education completed but not less than high school education or equivalent as recognized by an approved government accreditation association.
- Excellent Communication.
- Attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.
- Must have the mental and physical ability to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential functions of the job.
- Review daily self-pay worklist and aged trial balance to identify accounts requiring follow up
- Contact patients via phone, letter, email or portal to resolve outstanding balances
- Language proficiency in English, with excellent written and verbal fluency.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time and work at a computer remotely.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and compassion
- Strong communication and negotiation skills
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Education – Some College preferred
- Coursework in billing and healthcare collections
- Track record of teambuilding, process improvement and multi-departmental collaboration.
- EMR experience or other related electronic records systems.
- Minimum three years’ experience in patient registration, financial counseling and up-front collections
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
