Job Description

Job Title: Design Engineer 

Division: FiOptix Inc 

FSLA Status:  Non-Exempt

Reports To: Engineering Manager

Job Summary: This position is responsible for all aspects of fiber design, mapping, and document generation. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Interpret field survey drawing, notes, and pictures to compile proposed outside and inside fiber design in the designated engineering platform in accordance with customer specifications and standards
  • Calculate and design, design-build loss measurements and fiber assignments 
  • Identify fiber counts at a strategic fiber access point and design a path through aerial, buried, and underground facilities 
  • Manage and execute in depth preparation of all fiber allocation planning and required documentation to upload projects for customer quality control
  • Identify roadblocks caused by standards limitations or field survey inconsistencies and execute problem resolution and solutions-based ideas to resolve field challenges
  • Identify city, county or state right-of-way permit requirements for each assigned project
  • Research customer, city, county or state resources to obtain utility information necessary for the creation of right-of-way permit packages
  • Oversee the creation of all permit application documentation and drawings, scaled and/or non-scaled, required for the completion of right-of-way permit packages
  • Interact with the customer or designated municipality to resolve any permit updates, changes, corrections and/or concerns
  • Interface with the field surveyor and direct supervisor on day to day issues and meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.

Education: High school diploma, general education degree (G.E.D.), or related trade school education

Experience: 

  • Minimum four years’ design engineer experience 
  • Expert level understanding of fiber design criteria and efficient design in customer applications
  • Proven experience reading and understanding highway and road prints, and identifying conflicts with existing outside plant facilities
  • Proven experience with engineering in the public right-of-way and on private property
  • Prior experience creating and obtaining city, county and state right-of-way permits for use in a utility environment (i.e. cable, telephone, power, or water)

Technical Skills:

  • Computer and Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Experience in various customer applications; AutoCAD, ICGS, vBuild, BDMS, and 3GIS
  • Ability to interface with files such as Excel, Google Docs, KMZ, and AutoCAD
  • Basic mathematical skills and calculation ability

  • Highly organized and detail orientated 
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines 
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams 
  • Ability to think analytically, apply sound judgment, and solve problems
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets Company requirements
  • Ability to work at a desk for 6-8 hours a day
  • Ability to work long and unpredictable hours
