POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Administrative Nursing Manager provides administrative and clinical leadership during assigned shifts and is responsible for overseeing hospital operations in the absence of senior leadership. This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care by coordinating staffing, managing patient flow, supporting clinical teams, and responding to operational or emergency situations across all hospital departments.


The position is responsible for coordinating staffing for all shifts by maintaining appropriate staffing and skill levels. Facilitating patient flow and throughput with internal and external continuum stakeholders. Rounding on patient units to identify placement needs, available beds, and staff/patient capacity. Advocating for patients; monitoring quality of care delivered while ensuring it meets the age-related and developmental needs of patients. Supervising staff, assessing their needs and identifying educational opportunities. Managing and resolving clinical, human resource, employee, department safety, care experience, and risk-management issues. 


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Assists in determining staffing needs and plans.
  2. Monitors performance of nursing units and nursing services on assigned shifts
  3. Assists in implementing objectives, standards and plans pertaining to activities of nursing personnel within the units.
  4. Plans and schedules work of personnel and assign units and coordinates activities with other units and departments concerned with patient care.
  5. Evaluates daily staffing patterns and patient acuities for maximum utilization of nursing personnel.
  6. Coordinates, directs, evaluates, and suggests modifications of the day-to-day activities.
  7. Participates in the development and implementation of clinical policies, procedures and standards. Interprets these to nursing and ancillary staff, physicians, patients and the community as necessary.
  8. Consults with and advises/informs the Chief Nursing Officer and CEO as appropriate, concerning administrative issues, needs and problems.
  9. Coordinates activities between and with departments to promote cooperation of staff, delivery of patient care and to achieve department objectives.
  10. Maintains required reports, records and statistics for staffing and department.
  11. Appropriately handles shift incidents, problems, complaints and grievances. Assures the proper reporting form is completed and reports the same to Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Executive Officer and Department Managers.
  12. Makes frequent rounds to all departments to assure personnel are performing required duties and that appropriate care is being provided to meet patients’ needs.
  13. Establishes and maintains open and effective communication with all members of the healthcare team. Demonstrates and promotes effective problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  14. Directs and coordinates efforts during emergency situations. 
  15. Coordinates patient transfers when necessary.
  16. Participates in quality resources process. Organizes house supervisors’ monthly meetings and other meetings as requested by Nursing Administration Team.
  17. Provides education to House Supervisors as directed by Nursing Administration.



ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES BELOW:

 

  1. Contributes to performance appraisal, guidance and development of nursing personnel. Makes recommendations to nurse managers and informs them of departmental staff problems/concerns. Completes performance appraisals for House Supervisors.
  2. Provides clinical support to the staff and may perform staff nurse duties as need arises
  3. Knowledge of accrediting agency, Title 22 Standards, Hospital and Nursing Policies.
  4. Participates in conferences and education programs as required; and quality resources activities and issues that monitor to improve care provided.
  5. Enhances personal professional growth and development through education programs, seminars, etc. or maintains and demonstrates professional skills through self-development/continuing education. 
  6. Attends at least one management/leadership class per year and pertinent classes for specific skills relevant to job specification.
  7. Adjusts the schedules as necessary to provide adequate coverage for all clinical areas.
  8. Participates in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards for all clinical areas.
  9. Performs other duties as needed to facilitate workflow and to promote health care.
  10. Knowledge of accrediting agency standards, Title 22 Standards, Hospital, Nursing, EMTLA and Ancillary Policies.
