The Regional Sample Preparation Manager, USA plays a critical role in ALS’s hub-and-spoke operational model, overseeing six strategically located sample preparation laboratories (spokes) located in Twin Falls, Elko, Tuscon, Carson City, Las Vegas and Reno. These spoke labs are directly supported by and integrated with the Reno facility that centralizes sample preparation, warehousing, analytical services, quality and HSE functions and coordinates with the North America Hub in North Vancouver, Canada.
Reporting to the General Manager, Geochemistry North America, the Regional Manager ensures seamless coordination between the spokes and the hub, driving operational consistency, optimizing sample flow logistics, and maintaining high standards of service quality and compliance. This role is instrumental in aligning regional operations with corporate strategy, leveraging the centralized capabilities of the hub to enhance efficiency, responsiveness, and scalability across the region.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Lead and support branch managers and regional teams across all spoke locations.
- Foster a high-performance culture aligned with ALS core values.
- Collaborate with HR to mentor and develop high-potential employees.
- Ensure consistent implementation of SOPs, systems, and documentation across all sample preparation sites.
- Oversee workflow coordination, logistics, and quality assurance to maintain operational efficiency and compliance.
- Coordinate the efficient movement of samples from spoke labs to the Reno and Vancouver Hub labs.
- Leverage Reno and Vancouver Hub’s high-capacity capabilities to optimize regional throughput and turnaround times.
- Maintain strong client relationships and ensure timely, high-quality service delivery.
- Identify and support business expansion opportunities in the USA.
- Manage regional budgets and cost controls in collaboration with North America regional teams.
- Monitor financial performance and contribute to achieving revenue and profitability targets.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to ALS health, safety, and environmental policies.
- Champion ALS values and foster a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
- Support employee engagement through recognition, development, and communication initiatives.
- Ensure effective use of centralized systems (e.g., Webview) for data integrity and operational visibility.
- Support continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making.
- Conduct regular site visits and audits to evaluate operational performance, ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards, provide coaching to local teams, and drive alignment with company policies and laboratory best practices.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent English communication (written & verbal), public speaking, and ability to build client relationships.
- Proficiency in analyzing Profit & Loss statements, identifying trends, and making data-driven decisions to improve performance.
- Experience managing large-scale production or laboratory operations, meeting budgets, and achieving business targets.
- Strong judgment, integrity, adaptability, and ability to manage escalations in a fast-paced environment.
- Industry Knowledge: Understanding of analytical chemistry principles and client needs in Geological Sciences and Engineering.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
- Ability to set direction, inspire teams, and drive results in a dynamic, service-oriented business.
- Ability to manage change, work under pressure, and meet strict deadlines while maintaining a professional demeanor.
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in logistics, analytical testing or consulting in environmental or geological fields.
- 5+ years of supervisory experience in production, manufacturing, industrial, or laboratory environments.
- Experience in the mining, minerals analysis, or geology industries (preferred).
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
- University degree in Chemistry, Geology, or a related scientific field (preferred).
- Experience in laboratory or geological preparation facilities is an asset.
