About the Department
The Facilities Assistant performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of buildings, structures, and grounds. The position is responsible for the monthly replacement of air conditioning filters to ensure air conditioning systems in City buildings are properly maintained. This position assists the Maintenance Mechanics with replacing and repairing plumbing fixtures, maintaining and repairing gas fired boilers, HVAC equipment, pumps, motors, air compressors, electrical systems and related equipment. Other duties include graffiti removal and assisting with carpentry, masonry, plumbing and other repairs and maintenance of buildings and City maintained properties. Work is performed under the guidance and general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor.
Position Duties
- Responsible for the monthly replacement of air conditioning filters in assigned City buildings, which includes, but not limited to, accurately dating each filter, logging replacement dates in workbook and calendars, and cleaning around the vents.
- Responsible for identifying and removing graffiti found throughout the City on a weekly basis.
- Assists Maintenance Mechanics with installing, repairing, and replacing plumbing fixtures including valves, sinks, toilets, faucets, pipes, wash bowels, sanitary fixtures, water heaters, etc. and clearing obstructions from lines.
- Assists with annual inspections for the building fire alarms and fire sprinkler protection equipment.
- Unclogs stopped up drain lines. Removes debris and unclogs scuppers on roofs routinely.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance of machinery and equipment including but not limited to, replacement of filters in ice machines, water bottle filling stations or similar equipment, in various buildings, lubricating compactors, hinges, locks, and down rods on a regular basis.
- Accurately utilizing City Works, the work order system, managing assigned work orders, recording daily progress and updating for each job performed by the end of the day. Proactively enters work orders when necessary.
- Assists laborers, technicians, carpenters, painters, or other skilled trades persons within the Department and/or City as required and assigned.
- Performs a variety of other manual work related to the maintenance of buildings and City maintained properties, including but not limited to moving furniture, replacing light bulbs, routine graffiti removal and playground inspections.
- Responds to job-related emergencies as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma required. Two (2) years of experience in building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, and/or electrical preferred.
Experience working with a variety of hand and power tools, required. Ability to work in varying conditions and at heights, required.
Driver's License Requirement: Valid Florida Driver's License Classification E .

This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, and crouching throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move items up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move items up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and detect various colors with or without corrective lenses.
