Job Description

We are looking for a Manager of Software Engineering to lead a group of 8–10 developers and QA analysts across two teams focused on delivering API product solutions. You will act as a liaison between engineering and the business, partnering with product, operations, and executive stakeholders to deliver technology solutions that move our mission forward.

This is a people-leader role with meaningful technical depth. You will coach engineers, help shape our backend architecture and API strategy, drive delivery of internal and client-facing projects, and help define how we build software at Valeris for the next several years.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and grow the team. Manage, coach, and a group of engineers and QA analysts. Own hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, career development, and day-to-day team health.
  • Deliver outcomes. Own the on-time, high-quality delivery of internal and client-facing software projects. Guide teams through planning, estimation, execution, and launch.
  • Shape technical direction. Partner with senior engineering leadership, Architecture, and technology leads to align architectural direction for our backend APIs, services, and integrations. Balance new feature delivery with technical debt, reliability, and security.
  • Champion engineering excellence. Promote modern development practices including Agile/Scrum, CI/CD, automated testing, code review, and observability. Establish and refine the standards by which we build and ship software.
  • Partner across the business. Work closely with Product Management, Operations, Client Success, and executive stakeholders to translate business goals into technical roadmaps and clear delivery plans.
  • Drive continuous improvement. Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, tooling, and service delivery. Build consensus, implement change, and measure results.
  • Protect what matters. Ensure our systems meet HIPAA, PHI, and other relevant healthcare compliance and security requirements. Partner with Security and Compliance on audits, controls, and risk management.
  • Communicate clearly. Serve as an escalation point for project and technical issues, and keep executives, department leads, and end users informed on progress, risks, and decisions.
  • Plan for the future. Research and evaluate emerging technologies, make build-vs-buy recommendations, and contribute to long-term engineering strategy and budgeting.
  • Provide client onboarding support with the products and solutions that are delivered by your teams.  Collaborate with DevOps and SREs to ensure proper monitoring and issue detection are front and center.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field — or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience in backend API development (e.g., Java, C#, Python, Node.js, or Go) and service-oriented or microservices architectures.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex software projects on time, from requirements through production support.
  • Proven people-leadership skills — coaching, mentoring, giving and receiving feedback, and addressing performance concerns with care and clarity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical and business audiences.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, cross-functional, fast-paced environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in healthcare, pharmacy, PBM, specialty pharmacy, or other HIPAA-regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7, FHIR, NCPDP SCRIPT, or EDI.
  • Background managing both engineering and QA functions within the same team.
  • Experience utilizing agentic tooling such as Claude Code or Codex in a development capacity.

What Success Looks Like in Your First 90 Days

  • Built trusted relationships with your direct reports, peers, and key business stakeholders.
  • Developed a working understanding of our architecture, delivery process, and product roadmap.
  • Identified two to three near-term opportunities to improve team delivery, quality, or developer experience.
  • Partnered with leadership on the plan for the next quarter of engineering work.
