Position: Swim Instructor (Basic, Intermediate & Advance)  Salary Range: $15.20 -$16.25

About the Job
Ensures adequate safety procedures are in place for the class being taught. Communicates directions and/or corrections in a clear and concise mannerMaintains class control and discipline at all timesInstructor must be in proper attired (bathing suit) and on pool deck at least five minutes before start of class and have equipment ready and roster ready to take attendance. Instructors shall not leave the area of their class unless students in the class have left or their safety has been turned over to a department lifeguard, confirming transfer with the guard on deck. Develops lesson plans for each class of the session. It is the responsibility of each instructor to provide “practical” lesson plans for their substitutes (A substitute slip must be completed and signed for all classes missed). Evaluates stroke technique of participants. Keeps skill sheets, student progress records and attendance records up to date after each class meeting. Prepares student evaluations, with recommendations and comments for either staying in the current level, with an explanation why, or movement to the next level. Teaches group and private lessons. Maintains an uncluttered teaching area, returning all instructional equipment to the proper place. Relates with enthusiasm, patience, courtesy, tact, and concern when dealing with class members and parents. Attends and participates in all staff and instructors meetings. Other duties as required.

Qualifications:
 

Swim Instructor Basic:

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Possess an outgoing personality with the ability to relate well with participants of various age groups.
  • Must be attentive, multi-faceted, reliable, and a proven problem solverMust have positive mentality.
  • CPR and First Aid completion cards.
  • Obtain YMCA Swim Lesson Certification within nine (9) months.
Swim Instructor Intermediate: 
  • Must be 17 years of age.
  • At least two (2) years experience.
  • Possess an outgoing personality with the ability to relate well with participants of various age groups.
  • Must be attentive, multi-faceted, reliable, and a proven problem solverMust have positive mentality.
  • CPR and First Aid completion cards.
  • YMCA Aquatic Safety Awareness course completion may be substituted at the discretion of the Aquatic Director.
  • Must have one swim lesson certification. (YMCA swim lesson instructor, Red Cross WSI, or equivalent from outside agency, ymca lifeguard) if questions about certification can be answered by association aquatics director
Swim Instructor Advance:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess an outgoing personality with the ability to relate well with participants of various age groups.
  • Must be attentive, multi-faceted, reliable, and a proven problem solver.
  • Must have positive mentality.
  • CPR and First Aid completion cards.
  • Must have 4 years of aquatics teaching experience.
  • At least 2 water instruction certifications. (Including YASA, YMCA lifeguard, YMCA lifeguard instructor, Swim lesson instructor, YMCA swim coach cert, USA swim coaching cert, Red Cross WSI, Red cross Lifeguarding instructor, Aqua aerobics cert, Action against arthritis Cert, and other certifications along these lines) If certification not listed and questionable can be reviewed by association aquatics director.
  • Copies of certifications and reference checks required.
Working Conditions: 
  • Must have the physical ability to meet all prerequisites for YASA Lifeguarding.
  • Must be able to lift and move around objects of 40 pounds or more.
  • Swim 500 yards.
  • Must be able to actively teach the YMCA swim program in the water.
  • Ability to see and hear participants in distress or asking for assistance.

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility: 

  • Provides swimming instruction/or water exercise instruction to children and/or adults under the direct supervision of the Aquatic Director, Assistant Aquatic Director or Aquatic Coordinator; following the philosophy and goals of the YMCA Aquatic programs 

  • Primary responsibility is the safety of participants during class sessions 

 

Supervisory Responsibility:
