About the Department
The City of Elgin seeks an Assistant Corporation Counsel. This is an in-house position within the City’s Law Department and reports to the Corporation Counsel.
Position Duties
Responsibilities of Position
Responsibilities include providing legal advice and representation for the City, its officials, departments, staff and boards and commissions on a variety of areas of local government law, drafting and reviewing of ordinances, contracts and other legal documents, legal research and drafting of opinions, state and federal litigation including ordinance enforcement, arbitrations, real estate transactional work and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois and the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Excellent research skills, excellent interpersonal, negotiation, oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in local government law including familiarity with Freedom of Information Act, the Open Meetings Act, ordinance prosecution and other unique governmental legal aspects. Experience in a range of civil areas. Transactional skills and negotiating and drafting of contracts. Experience in real estate, development and zoning. Experience in employment law or collective bargaining. Experience in litigation and arbitration.
Other Qualifications
Completed applications must also include a resume and a writing sample. Applicants must pass a background investigation, criminal history record check and drug test. Salary range is $108,400 - $173,600, depending upon qualifications and experience, plus a comprehensive benefit package.
