About the Department

The City of Valdez Parks Maintenance Department is hiring 2 PM Tech I's. These positions, under supervision of the Parks Maintenance Technician are responsible for the maintenance, repair, security, and safe usage of Park Facilities.

This are temporary, non-benefited positions with estimated work from May through September, working  37.5 hours per week.

Positions are open until filled, review of applicants begins April 30, 2026. 

 Physical requirements and work environment:

  • Must have ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to walk/stand for long periods of time, walking up to 7 miles in a day with a full pack
  • Works regularly in outside conditions
  • Noise level is considered moderate with high level for extended periods of equipment operations

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must be 18yrs of age or older at time of employment
  • 2 years maintenance experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must have valid driver’s license
    • Must have clean driving record within the last 5 years, will be required to undergo drivers history

Position Duties

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and performs routine maintenance on all Park facilities such as parks, playgrounds, fields, courts, trails and buildings.  Performs carpentry work, paints, and does cement work as needed.
  • Assists with the identification of general maintenance needs.
  • Performs and documents safety evaluations for all playgrounds and sports venues
  • Assists in the training of subordinate staff
  • Works cooperatively with other departments, external agencies and the public for event and activity site preparation and logistics in parks and trails.

Knowledge, skills, and other characteristics:

  • Experience in parks and playgrounds infrastructure repairs including carpentry, masonry, small engines, and fencing
  • Working knowledge of construction skills
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools
  • Has knowledge of the Parks Facility Safety Plan and adheres to required safety regulations at playground structures
  • Must have the ability to work independently
