Job Summary:
The Health Technician assists the Coordinator of Health Services in implementing health services for the GISD Head Start Program. The Health Technician works in partnership with the Coordinator of Health Sciences. Areas of responsibility include conducting health screenings including vision, hearing, heights, and weights for Head Start/Early Head Start children, assisting with collecting and documenting required health information for children, meeting and following up with parents and/or staff as needed regarding health information, and providing health, nutrition and/or physical fitness lessons in Head Start classrooms.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):
1. Assists the Coordinator of Health Services in implementing the Health Services component of the Head Start/Early Head Start Program and participates in the activities of the Health team.
2. Disseminates necessary health information to staff and parents as requested by the Coordinator of Health Services.
3. Conducts vision and hearing screenings as well as height and weight health assessments and is responsible for the documentation and organization of data.
4. Assists with arranging screening processes and being involved as needed for Head Start recruitment and enrollment activities.
5. Provides health education information and follow-up with parents after screening processes.
6. Records chart information for child’s file.
7. Assists in setting up and providing training for staff and/or parents under the direction of the Coordinator of Health Services.
8. Provides health, nutrition and/or physical fitness lessons in Head Start classrooms.
9. Consistently models win-win leadership.

Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma required. State of Michigan Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license preferred. Certification (or willingness to obtain certification) to conduct vision and hearing testing for children required.
Experience:
Two years’ experience working or volunteering with children in a school or pediatric health setting. Experience conducting screenings, collection of documentation, and organizing health information preferred. Knowledge of computer technology, word processing and data management software required.
Skills/Other:
Ability to work creatively and skillfully with children. Exhibit an interest and enthusiasm for working with young children, peers and staff and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the essential duties of the position. Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license, current auto insurance and the ability to travel to and from various district sites. Ability to use ChildPlus database and work to maintain proficiency in data management systems as required. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards. Must be able to obtain Department of Human Services (DHS) approval, to pass a physical exam and to obtain a satisfactory criminal history check through fingerprinting. Must meet the Department of Health and Human Services vaccination requirement.
