Job Description

Primary Purpose:  

As an integral part of the total educational program, to assist each student toward the greatest possible degree of self-realization through understanding and acceptance of self, development of potential, and self-direction.

Qualifications:

 

           Educational/Certification:

A valid certificate as a guidance counselor­    

            A master's degree or its equivalent­ preferred            

           Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable


            Special Knowledge/Skills:

            Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

            Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

            Ability to instruct and manage student behavior

           

            Experience:

            Two years of successful teaching experience

                       

Major responsibilities and duties:                                                

­                                                                             

         1.     Assists in the designing and development of a guidance program based upon the needs assessment of target populations.

         2.     Interprets the guidance program to students, staff, parents, and community.

         3.     Secures and organizes cumulative records of high school students for maintenance by registrar.

         4.     Maintains and interprets current information about high education and requirements needed for entrance, special training, and occupational opportunity.

         5.     Develops and maintains a comprehensive testing program by working in concert with administration and special committees.

         6.     Evaluates budgetary needs and orders supplies and equipment for the guidance program.

         7.     Provides materials and develops procedures for the use of the career center.

         8.     Serves on the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee when appropriate.

         9.     Assists and counsels students concerning personal adjustment and educational and/or vocational planning.

      10.     Confers with students who are withdrawing from or dropping out of school.

      11.     Administers appropriate standardized tests to high school students.

      12.    Interprets test results to students and parents on request.

      13.    Provides necessary registration forms and information for college entrance examinations.

      14.    Provides orientation for new high school students and for Freshmen students.

      15.    Identifies students with special needs who require the services of referral agencies.

      16.    Provides information concerning financial aid and scholarships for higher education and coordinates applications with colleges and/or community agencies.

       17.    Coordinates visits between college, vocational school, and military service representatives and students while at school.

       18.    Participates in the scheduling process by counseling students relative to academic plans and courses to be taken prior to actual scheduling by registrar.

       19.    Conducts individual and group guidance as required by the guidance program or as special need arises

       20.    Exemplifies high standards of ethical conduct according to District Policy Manual.

       21.    Displays tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of duty performance

       22.    Maintains open communication with supervisory and other administrative personnel.

       23.     Actively participates in the organization and implementation of annual inservice programs, curriculum development efforts, professional growth options, and appropriate organizational activities.

       24.     Works in harmony with supervisory and peer personnel.

      25.    Uses professional information discreetly and judiciously.

      26.   Supports administrative and Board policy consistently.

      27.     Interprets the guidance program to the public.

      28.    Confers with parents concerning interpretation of student test results.

29. Performs other duties as assigned.                            

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

            Supervises assigned counseling aide(s) and clerical employee(s).

            Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
