Responsibilities
• Review and code outpatient, ambulatory, and clinic records using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes in accordance with coding guidelines.
• Assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes, including E/M levels and appropriate modifiers, with a high degree of accuracy.
• Ensure coding compliance with AMA, Medicare NCCI policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Review and apply charges for services provided by physicians and the facility.
• Maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive patient and hospital information and assist with monitoring coding workflows and systems.
Knowledge and Experience
• Must possess one of the following credentials: CPC, COC, CCA, or CCS-P.
• Minimum of two (2) years of coding experience, preferably in an acute care hospital setting.
• In-depth knowledge of outpatient coding/classification systems including diagnostic medicine, emergency room, outpatient surgery, general medicine/surgery, dental, and orthopedics.
• Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and applicable coding and reimbursement guidelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong organizational abilities and the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
• Proficiency with coding software applications and general office equipment including computers, fax machines, and copiers.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
• Physical Requirements: Position is primarily sedentary with prolonged computer use and requires the ability to sit for extended periods and perform repetitive hand/keyboard movements.
Environment
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska.
This role works primarily indoors within the Health Information Management department, supporting hospital-wide operations through accurate and timely coding practices in a collaborative, professional environment.
Job hazards include prolonged screen time, repetitive motion activities, and potential exposure to confidential and sensitive information requiring strict compliance with privacy regulations.
