Job Description

Job Requirements

This role requires routine manual labor associated with the daily cleaning of school buildings and to perform various duties requiring physical strength.

  • Must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License
  • Drive vehicles to assigned work sites
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
  • Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned, industrial floor scrubber, stripper/polisher and large wet mops

Abilities:

  • to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength
  • to follow simple oral and written instructions in the conduct of the job
  • to operate mechanical cleaning equipment
  • to establish and maintain working relations with supervisors, teachers, administrators, and students
  • sufficient hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks

Direct Supervisor

Building Principal and Director of Buildings & Grounds, may receive assignments from administrative personnel as required or assist with special projects as assigned by District administration.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain professional competence
  • Participate in meetings and perform other responsibilities as assigned by the principal or designee in accordance with the Board of Education
  • Ability to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job

A detailed description of duties and responsibilities can be found below:

Maintain a Safe and Secure Building

  • Lock and unlock doors, gates and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set alarms as appropriate
  • Manage door for events sponsored by outside agencies

Nightly Cleaning

  • Sweep, scrub, mop and vacuum hallways, stairs, restrooms, auditoriums, kitchens, classrooms, work areas and office space
  • Spot clean and shampoo carpets as needed
  • Clean up spills in hallways and/or classrooms which occur during shift
  • Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasium, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways, and other areas as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles, remove gum, debris, and graffiti as needed
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and classroom and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets, and urinals, fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper, and other items; wash mirrors, tile, walls and windows; unclog drains and toilets; and polish metal work

Exterior Duties

  • Clean walkways and entrance areas to building
  • Pick up paper and other debris
  • Sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to school building
  • Flag management

Trash Removal

  • Pick up trash inside and outside of the school building
  • Empty receptacles from all areas of the building and place it in outdoor dumpsters

Other Duties as Assigned by Supervisor

  • Enter work orders for any maintenance work into the computer
  • Follow up on work order status (i.e. monitor School Dude for outstanding orders)
  • Complete work orders as assigned
  • Complete paint orders as assigned
  • Complete supply orders and fax to appropriate department
  • Strip, wax, and polish floors as directed
  • Replace burnt out light bulbs when possible
  • Keep assigned custodial office/closet neat and organized
  • Report any security issues to your Principal or the Director of Buildings and Grounds
  • Keep equipment clean and report any repairs needed to supervisor or maintenance
  • Set up and break down areas for special events
