    Position Summary:

    The Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC) provides leadership and direct services to support the prevention, identification, intervention, and referral of students experiencing substance abuse or related social, emotional, and behavioral concerns that may impact their educational progress. The SAC develops, coordinates, and implements prevention and intervention programs, provides counseling and referral services, and collaborates with school staff, families, and community agencies to promote student well-being. The Student Assistance Coordinator endorsement authorizes the holder to perform the functions of a Student Assistance Coordinator in grades preschool through 12. The position of SAC shall be separate and distinct from any other employment position in the school.

    Requirements & Qualifications

    • New Jersey Student Assistance Coordinator Endorsement (Endorsement Code 3461)

    • Master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, social work, psychology, or related field

    • Successful Criminal History Clearance and physical

    • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or appropriate employment authorization

    • Knowledge of substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment resources

    • Ability to maintain a positive school environment

    • Strong interpersonal, counseling, and communication skills


    Responsibilities

    • Assist with the in-service training of school staff concerning substance abuse and related issues and support the district's program to combat substance abuse.
    • Serve as an information resource for substance abuse prevention, curriculum development, and instruction.
    • Assist the district in revising and implementing substance abuse and related policies and procedures in accordance with state law and district regulations.
    • Develop and administer substance abuse prevention and intervention services within the district.
    • Provide counseling and referral services to students regarding substance abuse and related problems.
    • Identify students at risk for substance abuse and related concerns through screening, consultation, and referral processes.
    • Provide short-term counseling, intervention, and case management services to students experiencing substance-related or related behavioral concerns.
    • Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, nurses, teachers, and other support staff to address student needs and promote a healthy school environment.
    • Participate as a member of Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) or other multidisciplinary teams supporting student success.
    • Cooperate with community service providers, treatment agencies, and other officials in the rendering of substance abuse and related treatment services.
    • Provide consultation and resources to parents/guardians regarding substance abuse prevention, intervention strategies, and community supports.
    • Maintain records and documentation of services provided, interventions, referrals, and student progress in accordance with district, state, and federal confidentiality requirements.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of prevention programs and school-wide initiatives related to student wellness and substance abuse prevention.
    • Remain current on laws, regulations, and best practices related to substance abuse prevention and student assistance programs.
    • Maintain professional competence through in-service educational activities provided by the district or through self-selected professional development.
    • Assure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to substance abuse services and student assistance programs.
    • Preserve and protect student confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
