Position Description
The Senior Superintendent leads day-to-day field execution on large, complex construction projects—directing subcontractors, consultants, and (where applicable) self-perform crews to deliver safe, high-quality work on schedule and within budget. This role partners closely with Project Management to drive planning, coordination, cost and change control, and consistent communication with owners, designers, inspectors, and authorities having jurisdiction. The Senior Superintendent is also expected to develop field leaders and contribute to continuous improvement of field operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all on-site construction activities (subcontractors, consultants, and self-perform work as assigned), ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract documents.
- Administer the project safety program and site-specific safety planning; conduct regular safety walks, correct hazards, and hold all trade partners accountable to OSHA and project requirements.
- Serve as, or assign, competent-person coverage for applicable work activities and ensure compliance with required safe work practices.
- Develop, manage, and maintain the project schedule and short-term look-ahead plans; align trade sequencing and commitments to key milestones.
- Lead the field operating rhythm (e.g., daily huddles/stand-ups, weekly foreman and subcontractor coordination meetings) to remove constraints, confirm readiness, and drive documented action items.
- Oversee subcontractor performance, manpower, sequencing, and productivity; verify readiness and resolve issues that could impact schedule, safety, or quality.
- Interpret plans, specifications, submittals, and change documents; coordinate constructability solutions and technical issue resolution with Project Management and design partners.
- Partner with Project Management on cost control and forecasting, labor/production tracking, and proactive identification of risks and mitigation strategies.
- Manage field change identification and documentation to support timely pricing, approvals, and accurate project records.
- Maintain high standards of quality control through inspections, testing/inspection coordination, punch list management, and closeout/turnover readiness (including documentation).
Essential Skills & Competencies
- Proven field leadership with strong judgment and bias for action
- Excellent communication skills; able to run effective field meetings and coordinate multiple stakeholders
- Strong planning discipline (CPM concepts, milestones, look-ahead planning, sequencing)
- Cost and productivity mindset (labor/production tracking, forecasting awareness, documentation accuracy)
- Strong contract document literacy (drawings, specs, submittals, change documents) and problem-solving ability
- High attention to detail and documentation habits (daily reports, meeting notes, closeout records)
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
- Ability to develop others through coaching, training, and accountability
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field or equivalent field experience
- 7+ years of construction field operations experience with 5+ years in a Superintendent (or equivalent) role on large or complex projects
- Demonstrated experience leading subcontractors and field teams; strong understanding of means, methods, sequencing, and site logistics
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, submittals, and change documents
- Working knowledge of CPM scheduling and look-ahead planning
- OSHA 30 certification
- Proficiency with construction technology and documentation tools used in modern jobsite environments
Preferred Experience (includes, but is not limited to):
- Aviation/airport, multifamily, or other large-scale commercial experience
- Experience managing self-perform work (labor/equipment/tools/material coordination)
- Construction Supervisor License (or local equivalent) and general familiarity with local building codes
- Experience with occupied facilities/active operations
- Familiarity with Procore, Primavera P6, or similar platforms
- Experience leading daily/weekly field meeting cadences and supporting cost/change controls
- Participation in client-facing meetings and relationship building

- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and sun exposure
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods
- Ability to navigate active construction sites with changing ground conditions and elevations
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to safely use ladders, scaffolding, and other access equipment as required
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Compensation & Benefits
The base salary for this position is one component of J. Benton Construction’s total compensation package. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including a candidate’s skills, experience, education, relevant qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
