Job Description

Description

A. Collection Operations

  • Drive and operate a Side Load recycling collection vehicle in full compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local traffic regulations, DOT requirements, and OTC vehicle operation and safety policies, maintaining constant awareness of pedestrians, cyclists, parked vehicles, and surrounding traffic.
  • Perform all required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle safety inspections, documenting results and reporting defects or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow assigned collection routes and schedules in accordance with OTC collection service procedures.
  • Operate side-load hydraulic arm and automated collection controls in accordance with training, ensuring containers are properly positioned and the collection area is clear prior to engaging lifting or dumping mechanisms.
  • Maintain proper seating position, mirror adjustment, and camera use to ensure clear visibility during side-load collection activities.
  • Follow all established procedures for vehicle scaling and unloading at the OTC Materials Recycling Facility while maintaining awareness of other vehicles, pedestrians, and mobile equipment.
  • Observe loads for visible contamination or improperly prepared materials and report issues to the Collection Supervisor.
  • Promptly report all accidents, injuries, equipment damage, property damage, and near-miss incidents to the Collection Supervisor.
  • Comply promptly and correctly with instructions from Collection Supervisors or the Collection Manager, including all safety-related directives.

 

B. Customer Service

  • Respond in a professional and courteous manner to customer questions and interactions.
  • Follow OTC policies for inspecting, accepting, or rejecting improperly prepared recyclable materials.
  • Communicate promptly and accurately with supervisors regarding service issues, missed pickups, or special collection needs.

 

C. Job Accountability & Communication

  • Complete all required driver logs, inspection reports, and collection documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors via radio or phone regarding route progress, delays, incidents, or non-collection activities.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting while operating a commercial vehicle
  • Repetitive use of hands and feet to operate steering, pedals, and hydraulic controls
  • Frequent head, neck, and upper-body rotation to monitor mirrors, cameras, and surroundings
  • Occasional entering and exiting of the vehicle
  • Ability to work safely around moving vehicles, containers, and hydraulic equipment
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to traffic, outdoor weather conditions, noise, and industrial recycling environments

Requirements

  • Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement
  • Must meet and maintain DOT medical certification requirements
  • Must maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record in accordance with organizational insurance standards
  • No DUI/DWI convictions and no MVR points within 3 years of hire
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions, maps, and route sheets
  • Ability to complete required documentation accurately
  • Ability to safely operate hydraulic collection systems and controls
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions

 

 Safety Requirements:

  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including high-visibility apparel, safety-toe footwear, gloves, and any additional PPE required for recycling collection operations.
  • Completion of required CDL, side-load vehicle operation, hydraulic equipment, and safety training is required prior to independent operation.
  • Comply with all DOT, FMCSA, and company safety regulations related to commercial vehicle operation.

 

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Employee will be required to complete all clearances as necessary per regulatory requirements.
