    The Hebron Public Schools is seeking Substitute Custodians for the Hebron Elementary and Gilead Hill Schools for the 2025-2026 school year.  Some shift change is expected on school vacations and weather-related events.  Candidates will have to undergo a background check and submit up to 1 (one) current letter of reference.

    Position Summary:
    The substitute custodian must be able to follow oral and written directions.  The substitute custodian must have physical strength and endurance to perform the duties of the position which requires:  bending, lifting and carry items weighing up to forty (40) pounds, reach and move equipment and objects. 
     
    General:
    The substitute custodian must be able to demonstrate a knowledge of and commitment to proper safety procedures and habits, particularly in the use of green cleaning methods and materials.  The substitute custodian must also be aware of indoor air quality practices and procedures. The substitute custodian must have the aptitude to operate the various electrical, plumbing, heating and lighting systems throughout the buildings and be able to maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff personnel.
     
    Duties & Responsibilities:
    The substitute custodian is assigned and reports to, and is under the direction and the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor.  The Facilities Supervisor is responsible to the superintendent.  The substitute custodian is a visible and important part of the daily school operation and carries out his/her duties and responsibilities in full view of the students, staff and public.  The primary duty is to clean and maintain the buildings and grounds in a safe and sanitary condition for the well-being of students and staff.  The custodial personnel, while reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, often are assigned to work alone and must demonstrate sufficient initiative and responsibility to complete all duties with minimal supervision.  In the performance of his/her duties, the substitute custodian will observe and carry out Board policy and all directives, rules, and regulations relating to his/her job assignments.
     
    1.  Performs duties relevant to the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds.  Among these duties, but not limited to them, are:
      • Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
      • Scrubs and disinfects lavatory floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.  Replenish paper products.
      • Washes all windows, cleans all chalkboards, and cleans all student desks.
      • Strips, washes and waxes floors as directed.
      • Vacuums all carpets.
      • Cleans gymnasiums daily.
    2. Operates equipment in a responsible and safe manner.
    3. Replaces lights, pencil sharpeners, etc., when necessary.
    4. Paints designated areas as instructed.
    5. Maintains building security.
    6. Reports all problems or damage to district foreman
    7. Removes snow and sands walks as directed.
    8. Makes minor building repairs as directed.
    9. Complies with procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
    10. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
    11. Performs mail run as assigned.
    12. Assigned to building emergency call list.
    13. Performs other duties as assigned by district foreman or building administrator.
    14. Keep accurate records, as established by the district foreman, of the custodial maintenance and supply inventory.
    15. Custodian will routinely check emergency lighting, air control units, heat, cooling, fire and security alarms, and any other systems on a regular basis and report problems to the district foreman or, in his absence, the building administrator.
    16. Maintain grounds as directed by the district foreman.
    17. Report to different schools and work areas as assigned by the district foreman.
    18. Helps with deliveries.
     
    Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Solid understanding of technical aspects of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems etc.
    • Working knowledge of facilities machines and equipment
     
    Physical Requirements:
    Must have the physical ability to execute the full performance of duties for the position, including but not limited to:  reaching, some lifting, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
