Job Description

We are seeking an energetic and student-centered educator to join our upper elementary team. This role is designed for a teacher who thrives in the "bridge years," helping students transition from foundational primary skills to the complex analytical thinking required in grades 3–5. The successful candidate will be an expert in delivering Common Core standards while fostering a classroom culture aligned with the Maine Guiding Principles.

Primary Responsibilities & Expectations

1. Instructional Excellence (CCSS & Maine Learning Results)

  • Literacy & Math: Design and execute high-quality lessons in ELA and Mathematics following the Common Core State Standards, ensuring students move successfully from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."

  • Interdisciplinary Curriculum: Deliver Science and Social Studies instruction aligned with the Maine Learning Results, including the integration of Maine-specific content and the Wabanaki Studies (LD 291) curriculum.

  • Data-Driven Planning: Utilize state and local assessment data (e.g., NWEA, Maine Science Assessment) to track growth and adjust instructional groups.

2. Support for the Grades 3–5 Learner

  • Developmental Scaffolding: Adapt instruction to meet the cognitive shift from concrete to abstract thinking typical of 8–11-year-olds.

  • Executive Function Coaching: Explicitly teach and model organizational habits, time management, and independent study skills.

  • Social-Emotional Leadership: Implement a consistent SEL framework to help students navigate the evolving social dynamics and "self-critical" phase of late childhood.

3. Inclusive & Differentiated Practice

  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Ensure all CCSS-level content is accessible to a diverse classroom, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, and Multilingual Learners (MLs).

  • Collaboration: Partner with the Special Education team, the 2/3 Music/Band specialist, and other "Specials" teachers to provide a holistic, "Whole Child" education.
