This position is for entry-level officers who have not completed police academy training
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Enforce laws and ordinances of the municipality
- Provide service and assistance to the public in non-law enforcement situations
- Respond to calls and complaints involving criminal and non-criminal incidents
- Administer first aid at the scene of an accident
- Conduct preliminary and/or follow-up investigations
- Interview witnesses and gathering evidence and information
- Direct traffic
- Issue traffic and parking citations; speaking to school, civic, and church groups
- Operate motor vehicles
- Write and file reports
- Perform related tasks as assigned
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Investigation methods and techniques.
- Interviewing and interrogation techniques.
- General criminal law and law enforcement.
- Departmental rules, regulations, and policies.
- Controlled substances and the laws governing them.
- Word processing and the use of computers.
ABILITY TO:
- Gather evidence from a variety of sources, to organize and analyze the evidence, and to draw conclusions from it.
- Type using a work processor or other computer equipment.
- Produce comprehensive written reports.
- Interact and effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals having greatly differing education levels, social-economic levels, and communication abilities.
- Gather relevant information under difficult circumstances, and to maintain composure during stressful situations.
- Read, learn, and interpret complex written laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Follow detailed oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to perform any/all duties assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality in all investigations.
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES:
Education: High school diploma or state-recognized equivalent
Experience: Satisfactory prior work (job) experience, if applicable, and good moral character
License: Must possess a valid driver’s license acceptable MVR
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Environment: All types of weather and temperature conditions. Work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and verbally communicate to exchange information.
Physical: Work is performed in an office environment and in close proximity to other workers. The incumbent shall be exposed to those conditions normally encountered in a business office environment. Primary functions require the sufficient physical ability to operate assigned equipment. FREQUENT bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing; standing, sitting, reaching at and above shoulder height, kneeling, balancing above ground, pushing and pulling, crawling, twisting at waist, upward and downward flexion of the neck, side-to-side turning of the neck; lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, equipment dials and gauges, color vision acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
NOTE: Police Officers of the City of Starkville are required to live within 40 miles of Oktibbeha County.
