Description
The Public Policy Associate (PPA) is a part-time staff position (20 hours per week) supporting the Gale Epstein Center’s policy initiatives. The PPA will assist with planning and executing the Center’s policy priorities, in alignment with its December 11, 2024, Strategic Plan. Reporting directly to Executive Director John Cronin, the PPA will work alongside the executive director and the environmental research associate to develop model policies for reforming the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act and the New York State Sanitary Code. These policies will focus on the use of information and monitoring technologies for reporting and notification procedures related to water quality.
Position Duties
- Analyze the public reporting requirements of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act and the New York State Sanitary Code and identify alternative electronic means for reporting.
- Analyze current public emergency reporting systems, such as the Federal Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), and the statewide NY-Alert.
- Use Pace Pleasantville’s status as a public water supply to develop and test social media and electronic communication models for university water consumers.
- Assist with the drafting and submission of formal petitions to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the NYS Department of Health for rules changes that will better inform the public regarding drinking water quality and emergencies that arise from drinking water threats.
- Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Work Hours
Exact hours to be determined with supervisor; generally up to 20 hours per week. Ability to participate in-person on a regular basis with Center staff on the Pace Pleasantville campus; a presence at the Friday meetings of Blue CoLab on the Pleasantville campus.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in environmental science or policy required.
- Work experience in the federal government and environmental policy.
