Who You Are
You are a reliable, customer-focused problem solver. You effectively communicate, and listen, through cooperation and teamwork. You are always looking to improve whether learning something new or seeking ways to promote better quality. You are driven to do what it takes to get the job done!
Mission:
The Safety Officer is responsible for implementing, enforcing, and continuously improving a comprehensive safety program tailored to the unique hazards of standby generator commissioning, maintenance, repair, load bank testing, and automatic transfer switch (ATS) servicing on active construction jobsites and in-service facilities. Working in close collaboration with the company Safety Council, this role serves as the on-the-ground safety leader — ensuring that OSHA, NFPA 70E, applicable site-specific requirements and safe driving standards are followed daily and that every field technician goes home safely.
Obsessions:
- Building and sustaining a safety-first culture where technicians feel empowered to stop work, report hazards, and hold each other accountable.
- Electrical safety — relentlessly enforces NFPA 70E standards, arc flash boundaries, and proper PPE selection across all commissioning, testing, and maintenance activities.
- Safety compliance — ensuring teams meet the specific safety requirements of every general contractor, owner, and facility on every project as well as at our own facilities. This includes ownership of customer safety portals and all required compliance reporting (i.e. OSHA).
- Proactive hazard identification — spotting and eliminating risks before they become incidents, especially in the high-voltage, high-consequence environments our technicians work in as well as on the road.
- Effective partnership with our Safety Council — translating strategic safety initiatives into field-ready programs, training, and procedures our teams actually use.
Expectations: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following expectations satisfactorily.
Daily
- Conduct safety observations on active construction jobsites and service locations where technicians are commissioning, load banking, or maintaining standby generator equipment.
- Verify technicians are following NFPA 70E requirements prior to beginning energized electrical work — including proper arc flash PPE, risk assessments, and energized work permits where required.
- Confirm adherence to site-specific safety plans, GC/owner orientations, and permit requirements (confined space, hot work, lockout/tagout, etc.) before work begins.
- Respond promptly to near-misses, incidents, or unsafe conditions reported by field technicians or site supervisors.
Weekly
- Review field activity schedules to anticipate high-risk tasks (e.g., load bank tie-ins, ATS switchovers, paralleling operations) and ensure appropriate safety measures are planned in advance.
- Conduct or facilitate jobsite safety observations and document findings, issue corrective actions and track to closure.
- Coordinate with the Safety Council on open action items, upcoming training needs, and program updates.
- Review and log incident reports, near-misses, and safety observations in the safety management system.
Monthly
- Deliver or coordinate role-specific safety training for field technicians, including NFPA 70E refreshers, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE inspection, emergency response protocols relevant to generator and ATS work, warehouse safety and safe driving programs.
- Compile and present a safety performance report to leadership covering incident trends, observation data, corrective action status, and training completion rates.
- Conduct formal safety audits of active project sites and service accounts; document findings and develop corrective action plans.
- Review and update Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for core task types: generator commissioning, load bank testing, ATS maintenance and switchovers, high-voltage work, and fuel system servicing.
- Partner with the Safety Council to review monthly safety program metrics and corrective action status.
- Own and maintain safety portals as required by customers
- Lead our company Safety Council
Quarterly
- Partner with the Safety Council to review, update, and improve the company’s safety management system, written programs, and policies in alignment with the annual strategic safety plan.
- Lead emergency response drills relevant to field operations (electrical incident response, arc flash, generator fire/fuel spill scenarios) and debrief outcomes.
- Audit the company’s arc flash hazard assessments and PPE inventory for currency and adequacy against current NFPA 70E requirements.
- Review GC/owner site-specific safety requirement updates for active projects and ensure company procedures remain aligned.
- Benchmark the company’s safety performance against industry peers and bring improvement recommendations to the Safety Council for strategic planning.
Ad Hoc
- Investigate workplace and vehicle accidents, injuries, near-misses, and property damage incidents; produce formal root cause analysis reports with corrective action plans.
- Attend pre-construction safety meetings, GC-required orientations, and project kickoff meetings as the company’s safety representative.
- Support the contracts, sales and estimating process by reviewing project-specific safety requirements and advising on safety-related costs or compliance obligations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact during regulatory inspections, GC safety audits, or owner-initiated safety reviews.
- Other duties and projects assigned.
Success Metrics:
- Most Critical Outcome: Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) at or below the NAICS benchmark for electrical contractors with year-over-year improvement.
- Additional Measurements:
- Year Auto, Liability, and Property Insurance Loss Ratios of 40% or less
- 100% NFPA 70E compliance on all energized electrical work activities, verified through field observations and audits.
- 100% on-time completion of mandatory safety training for all field technicians, including role-specific electrical safety and NFPA 70E coursework.
- Corrective actions from audits and incidents closed within defined timeframes (target: 90%+ within 30 days).
- Zero repeated OSHA violations or GC/owner safety disqualifications.
- Consistent execution of the annual strategic safety plan milestones, as defined in partnership with the Safety Council.
Qualifications/Experience/Education:
- 3+ years of demonstrated experience in an occupational health and safety role; experience in the electrical contracting, power generation, or industrial services industries strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace) is required; experience applying arc flash risk assessment, energized work permitting, and PPE selection in the field is essential.
- Solid understanding of OSHA standards applicable to construction and general industry (29 CFR 1926 and 29 CFR 1910), including lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, and hazard communication.
- Familiarity with standby generator systems, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and load bank testing operations is a significant advantage; willingness and ability to develop deep technical knowledge of these systems is required.
- Experience working within general contractor-managed construction jobsite environments, including compliance with site-specific safety plans and multi-employer worksite obligations.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Electrical Technology, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field — or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Professional certifications preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry, NFPA 70E certification, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to translate strategic safety plans into operational procedures and influence field behavior without direct authority.
- Highly competent in the use of Microsoft Office 360 and other Microsoft products/systems. Strong technical aptitude, including ability to learn new systems quickly and train/support team in adoption.
