These Architectural Assistant (x2) internships are being hosted by Architecture (School of Arts, Lancaster University) in partnership with The National Trust.

The National Trust look after historical places, objects and landscapes. They share history in several ways including tours, exhibitions, books, displays, leaflets and academic papers.  They work with qualified professionals and volunteers to make sure the history they present is well-rounded and factual.

The National Trust’s new strategy sets out their aims and ambitions for the next decade and beyond. They have three ambitious goals for 2050:

• to restore nature – not just on National Trust land, but everywhere;
• to end unequal access to nature, beauty and history;
• to inspire millions more people to care and take action.

Alongside their tenant farmers, the National Trust looks after 20% of the Lake District National Park, including England's deepest lake and highest mountain. They work to restore habitats for nature and to conserve the cultural heritage within a dozen historic buildings.

These internships are creative roles that will involve observation, surveying, recording and assessing a heritage asset located in the Lake District. This is a unique opportunity for students with an interest in heritage structures to work with The National Trust. The successful candidates will be contributing to an understanding of these heritage assets that will form a basis for the future restoration and occupancy plans.

Working Hours / Pattern: 70 hours in total, to be agreed between the successful candidate and Architecture, School of Arts, Lancaster University, and The National Trust.

Location: Hybrid Work (on site, campus, remote)

• Work with National Trust.
• Research the history of the building – architectural, historical and regional significance.
• Undertake a survey and prepare drawings, photographs and defect assessments.
• Use industry software CAD to input measurements and data.
• Prepare a document on the heritage assessment of the building and building condition assessment using a typical building survey template.
• Work jointly with another intern on Campus / on Location (Lake District) as part of a team and at times independently.

• An interest in Heritage Architecture and landscapes.
• Computational drawing skills essential.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or other 2D CAD software.
• Experience in measuring surveying buildings an advantage.
• Interest in research and collating information.
• Self-organisation - ability to plan and manage the project and own time.
• An ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• A good communicator – visual, written and oral.
