Position: Project Engineer, NPD - Air & Water
Department: Engineering – Air & Water (Honeywell, PUR)
Work Location: Marlborough, MA, Hybrid (work 3 days onsite)

What you will be doing:
The Project Engineer is responsible for leading the technical development of innovative electromechanical consumer products within the Wellness (Air & Water) portfolio, including brands such as Honeywell®, PUR®, and Vicks®.
This role owns the engineering execution from early concept through production, working across a global cross-functional team spanning the U.S. and Asia. The Project Engineer partners closely with Marketing, Industrial Design, Quality, Regulatory, and Operations to translate consumer insights into differentiated product solutions that balance performance, cost, reliability, and speed to market.
The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on engineering capability with systems thinking, enabling them to define product architecture, guide development decisions, and work effectively with global manufacturing partners to bring products to market successfully.
Product Development & Technical Ownership
Lead engineering development of consumer products from concept through commercialization, ensuring alignment to performance, cost, quality, and schedule targets.
Translate consumer insights, product requirements, and marketing inputs into clear engineering specifications and system-level design intent.
Define and drive product architecture, including mechanical, electrical, and system integration considerations.
Design & Engineering Execution
Develop and refine product concepts using CAD tools (Creo or equivalent), prototyping, and engineering analysis.
Create and evaluate proof-of-concept models, breadboards, and functional prototypes.
Apply engineering principles, testing, and analysis to guide design decisions and resolve technical challenges.
Conduct competitive benchmarking and incorporate insights into product design.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner closely with Industrial Design to ensure products meet aesthetic and user experience expectations while maintaining engineering integrity.
Collaborate with Advanced Quality Engineering (AQE) on DFMEA, risk assessments, and design robustness.
Work with Regulatory and Compliance teams to ensure all applicable safety and regulatory standards are met.
Support Legal in patent review and clearance processes.
Global Development & Supplier Engagement
Work with Asia Pacific Operations (APO) and contract manufacturers to execute detailed design, development builds, pilot production, and ramp to mass production.
Provide technical guidance to suppliers and ensure design intent is maintained through manufacturing.
Support issue resolution during builds, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Testing, Validation & Launch
Define and support product validation strategies, including reliability, performance, and compliance testing.
Participate in lab testing, troubleshooting, and development of both custom and standardized test methods.
Ensure readiness for production and successful product launch at scale.
Cost & Continuous Improvement
Conduct value analysis and cost optimization activities throughout development.
Identify opportunities for design simplification, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
Support ongoing product improvements and engineering changes as needed.
Skills needed to be successful in this role:
Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and within a team
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
3+ years of experience in consumer product development or high-volume manufacturing environments
Experience developing electromechanical products from concept through production
Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (Creo/Pro‑E or equivalent)
Knowledge of plastic injection molding and consumer appliance manufacturing processes
Hands‑on prototyping and fabrication experience
Experience with product testing, validation, and troubleshooting
Working knowledge of DFMEA and risk‑based design approaches
Experience working with global teams and contract manufacturers (Asia preferred)
Familiarity with product cost analysis and estimation
Understanding of global compliance standards (UL, ETL, CSA, CE, etc.)
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and IP documentation
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
Flexibility to collaborate across global time zones
Ability to travel domestically and internationally (approx. 5–10%)
Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with RFQs and managing external engineering partners or SMEs
Experience benchmarking competitive products and technologies
Exposure to mold flow analysis and simulation tools
Experience in air treatment, water filtration, or related consumer appliance categories
Experience supporting IoT-enabled or connected products
In Massachusetts, the standard base pay range for this role is $82,170.17 - $102,712.71 annually. This base pay range is specific to Massachusetts and may not be applicable to other locations. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to location, experience, skill level, and performance. The range listed is just one component of the total compensation package for employees.
