This role is responsible for leading, developing, and implementing the environmental, health and safety strategy for the Bread, Dough and Specialty Business Unit within Marzetti. The Sr. Health and Safety Manager will ensure compliance with all applicable laws and corporate standards while driving a proactive safety culture. This role will partner with plant managers, supply chain leaders, and corporate EHS to reduce risk, enhance employee wellbeing and promote continuous improvement in environmental, health and safety. In addition, this role will serve as the subject matter expert for the company wide Process Safety Management (PSM) program.
Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and results of the enterprise safety and physical security function. Directly or indirectly manages local EHS&S staff at their facilities. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, training, scheduling, appraising, and investigating incidents; planning, assigning, and directing work; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints/grievances, resolving problems, and interpreting policies.
****This is a remote role with a preference of candidates who live in or near Altoona, Iowa, Horse Cave, Kentucky, or Columbus, Ohio. While this is a remote role candidates should be based near a major airport for ease of travel.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the business unites Health and Safety strategy in alignment with corporate EHS goals.
- Lead implementation of risk-based safety management systems, audits, and performance tracking tools.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local occupational health and safety standards.
- Manage incident investigations and root cause analysis, ensuring timely corrective and preventative actions.
- Coaches, guides, and mentors EHS&S site staff under direct or indirect reporting models.
- Support teams in achieving continuous improvement in safety performance metrics, both leading and lagging.
- Develop and deliver effective health and safety training for all levels of the organization.
- Act to recognize and reward proactive safety performance and improvement initiatives.
- Serves as a primary EHS&S department contact with FM Global, private security firms, U.S. Department of Labor, and similar safety and security-related parties.
- Partners with Marzetti management teams regarding compliance and policy matters.
- Performs routine inspections and assessments for continuous improvement.
- Partners with sites to prepare for and host third parties during their EHS&S audits of Marzetti operations. May provide onsite support as necessary during audits.
- Provides governance over workers’ compensation claims processes including, but not limited to, program management, collaborating on case management, and record retention across the business unit.
- Assists in the onboarding of new EHS&S staff members, new leaders, and other individuals.
- Ensures accurate OSHA Recordkeeping and proper worker’s compensation documentation across the Business Unit, including occupational noise exposure.
- Maintains and produces accurate safety and security metrics reports for internal and external purposes.
- Maintains close working relationships with other functional staff to foster a zero-harm mindset, including operations, human resources supply chain, engineering, maintenance, operational excellence, quality, and sanitation. Responds to deviations from standards immediately.
- Provides analysis of trends and costs associated with safety and security oversight, along with budgetary input.
- Manages physical security standards and programs including access control systems, cameras, fencing, guard stations, lobby check in and alarm systems.
- Provides interim site-level EHS&S support when necessary (ex. Vacancies, PTO, etc.)
- Performs other duties/responsibilities as assigned by management, including EHS&S tasks outside of safety and security duties.
- Maintains the corporate process safety management (PSM) program by ensuring compliance dates are met, auditing recordkeeping, and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred, with five (5) years of experience in occupational safety and physical security profession necessary.
- 5+ years’ experience leading safety and security efforts across multiple industrial sites.
- Demonstrated project management experience, preferably in manufacturing environments.
- Experience leading others preferred.
- 2+ years’ experience developing the safety and security strategic plan for a company, business unit, or function.
- 2+ years’ experience working in a process safety management (PSM) environment, preferably anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Strong people skills and self-motivation.
- Bias for action and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to drive the EHS programs forward and engage associates within all levels of the organization across multiple industrial locations in various U.S. states.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Experience with safety, security, OSHA, and worker’s compensation administration in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the food industry.
- Ability and desire to travel to business unit facilities and other locations.
Working Conditions/Environment:
- Works in office, R&D, and manufacturing environments where the Team Member is regularly required to speak, read, and comprehend, stand, walk, reach, lift, grasp, climb, and bend while working in a fast-paced production environment.
- May be required to work overtime and/or weekends as needed.
- The employee is regularly exposed to heat, fumes, odors, dust, oil, slippery floors, moving parts/equipment and non-toxic industrial waste and scrap.
- Slip-resistant steel-toed shoes, earplugs, safety glasses, hairnets, beard nets (if facial hair exists) are required to be worn/used in accordance with company GMP and Safety standards. Condition of these items must be inspected by employee daily and be replaced when no longer providing the optimal protection of the Team Member or food safety.
