    Description
    Perform responsible human support work assisting with the transportation of pupils with special transportation needs to and from school, providing help to the school bus driver; securing passengers in their seats; assisting students boarding and leaving the school bus.
     
     
    Reports To
    Bus Driver/Transportation Department
     
     
    Qualifications
    • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
    • General knowledge of the transportation of students preferred.
    • Some knowledge of transporting students with special needs preferred.
    • Ability to assist students with patience and understanding.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students and colleagues.
     
     
    Performance Responsibilities
               • Assist students on and off buses. 
               • Ensure that all student passengers, including those in wheelchairs and braces, are properly secured in
                  their assigned seats or wheelchair slot. 
                • Assist in controlling student behavior. 
                • Tend to the special needs and conditions of each student. 
                • Learn bus routes, schedules, and pickup points. 
                • Assist substitute drivers with directions. 
                • Keep abreast of route and bus stop changes and student day care arrangements. 
                • Assist drivers in conducting bus evacuation drills. 
                • Assist drivers in maintaining a clean bus interior. 
                • Perform related work as required.
     
    Physical Requirements
    • Duties are performed on a school bus.
    • Frequently exposed to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from driving a bus; and traffic.
    • Frequently required to sit;
    • Exhibit physical dexterity in using hands, fingers, to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb; bend, stoop, and kneel; and talk and hear.
    • The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.
    • Ability to lift to 50 pounds occasionally and over 50 pounds rarely.
    • Must have the ability to use emergency exits at any location on the bus.

    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with Northampton County Public Schools supervision procedures.
