Staff Accountant

Department:
TOTAL CONCORD
Location:
Concord, NH
Area of Interest:
Accounting/Finance

The Company:

The Granite Group is a leading wholesale distributor of your heating, cooling, HVAC, oil, well and water solutions in New England. For 55+ years, we serve our customers through 75+ branches, 19+ Sink and Spout showrooms and online store throughout NH, VT, ME, MA, CT and RI. We are a People First company and take pride in our reputation of going the distance for our customers, our suppliers and our employees. For decades, we delight our customers by first taking care of our own employees. We believe that happy employees bring happy customers.

The Position:

The Staff Accountant performs various general accounting related activities such as month-end close, year-end audit support, and ensuring adequate internal controls and compliance. As The Granite Group believes in a flat structure and takes pride in our non-hierarchical culture, the Staff Accountant is given the opportunity to fully own several income statement and balance sheet accounts. You could expect to develop a deep expertise in various parts of the business through this ownership as you perform activities such as booking journal entries, reconciling balance sheets, and investigating variances to the budget and to the historical trends.

Once you are fully settled into the Staff Accountant role, as part of a growing company, both organically and through acquisition, opportunities also abound both for lateral and upward mobility. Examples may include rotating within the Accounting team to own different accounts, which would enable you to round out a comprehensive understanding of the business. Other examples include participating in cross-functional business improvement or automation projects within the broader Finance team and beyond.

If you have a degree in Accountancy and have proven success as an early-stage Accountant, you will enjoy what The Granite Group and this role has to offer: a unique opportunity to elevate your business acumen through practical, hands-on experience in performing accounting and financial reporting activities. This is not a back-office role. Instead, you will be given many opportunities to interact with branch personnel through reporting and investigative work.

If and when you have capacity for more growth and challenges, you will be offered the opportunity to interact with other departments within The Granite Group through participation in projects with

What you will be doing:

  • Ensure income statement and balance sheet accounts are reported accurately and in compliance with accounting policies and procedures
  • Establish business partnerships for key stakeholders of the general ledger accounts that you own; invest time to understand their business so as to ensure your financial reporting is accurate to the best of your knowledge

  • Within the scope of your work, identify and drive opportunities for process improvement
  • Create monthly financial reporting package for 20-30 branches
  • Assist with various audit requests on an as needed basis: annual bank audit / field exam, annual inventory appraisal, and year end auditor requests
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Controller

  • Strong excel skills and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Teams
  • Attention to detail is a must, along with strong organizational skills
  • Problem-solving skills are required: demonstrated ability to identify problems and perform investigative work to propose solutions

  • Cultural fit is a must: superior people skills to effectively work with co-workers and others within the company

Qualifications:

  • 4 years college degree in accounting, finance or business
  • Minimum 2 years experience as an Accountant
