Position Summary

Position Summary

Light & Wonder is the global leader in cross-platform games and entertainment. The company brings together 5,000 employees from six continents to connect content between land-based and digital channels with unmatched technology and distribution. Guided by a culture that values daring teamwork and creativity, Light & Wonder builds new worlds of play, developing game experiences loved by players around the globe.

The Associate Platform Architect is a hands-on technical role for an experienced software engineer ready to broaden their impact. You'll remain close to the code while developing the architectural thinking needed to shape platform direction. This is a genuine growth opportunity: you'll work alongside senior architects on complex technical decisions, contribute directly to new platform development, and build the skills to progress into more senior architecture roles.

You'll be joining at an exciting time; we're building and scaling new platforms in a fast-paced delivery environment where your contributions will have visible impact from day one.

What You'll Do

Hands-On Development (Primary Focus)

  • Design and build platform components using Java, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud

  • Develop cloud-native services on AWS, working with containerisation, serverless patterns, and managed services

  • Work with MongoDB and PostgreSQL, understanding when to apply document vs relational models

  • Design and implement REST APIs with OpenAPI specifications; consume and integrate third-party services

  • Contribute to event-driven architecture using Kafka for asynchronous communication and system integration

  • Write clean, testable, well-documented code that others can build upon

  • Participate in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback

Architecture Contribution

  • Collaborate with senior architects on solution design and technical decision-making

  • Create and maintain technical documentation including design proposals and architecture decision records

  • Evaluate technology options and present recommendations with clear trade-off analysis

  • Participate in Architecture Review Board discussions, learning how platform-wide decisions are made

Modern Engineering Practices

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, etc.) effectively and help establish team practices around their use

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline development using GitHub Actions and infrastructure-as-code

  • Champion engineering quality through automated testing, observability, and operational excellence

Qualifications

What We're Looking For

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on Java proficiency
  • Solid experience with Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Cloud, Spring Security, Spring Data)
  • Demonstrable experience building and operating services in cloud environments (AWS preferred, GCP/Azure acceptable)
  • Practical experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes/ECS) and modern deployment practices
  • Hands-on experience with both relational and NoSQL databases - ideally PostgreSQL and MongoDB
  • Familiarity with architectural patterns: microservices, event-driven architecture, API design, domain-driven design concepts
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger specifications
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)

Why would you enjoy working with us at Light & Wonder?

  • Competitive benefits, an open and supportive environment as well as a modern and exciting workplace

  • The opportunity to interact with global teams on a regular basis

  • Tangible and genuine development - at Light & Wonder, you can take your career where you want it to go!

And if that’s not enough; you will get to enjoy a stunning work location and flexible working practices whilst we provide you with the guidance and development skills you need to progress quickly and enhance your career.
