Job Description

ROLE PURPOSE
The Director of Housing provides strategic and operational leadership to ensure Connective maintains a high‑performing and diverse housing portfolio that meets the needs of our current and future service users. This role drives the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of our housing operations, asset management systems, and tenant experience across multiple properties in 7 regions.

Acting as a key partner to the Vice President, Housing & Technology, the Director brings deep expertise in property operations, team leadership, and change management to support a rapidly expanding organization. This role will lead a team of managers who focus on establishing safe and well-maintained environments for residents, staff, and visitors.


REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports and is accountable to the Vice President, Housing & Technology
  • Participates as a member of the Connective Director Group 
  • Oversees the following direct reports: Maintenance & Asset Manager and Senior Managers of Building Infrastructure & Asset Management
  • Collaborates closely with senior leadership, external partners, funders, and community organizations.



KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Strategic & Portfolio Leadership

  • Develops medium‑ and long‑term asset management strategies to ensure buildings remain safe, efficient, and aligned with the organization’s strategic direction.
  • Identifies growth opportunities (acquisitions, redevelopments, renovations) and provides recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Serves as a subject‑matter expert on property operations and portfolio expansion, supporting VP‑level decision‑making.

 

Operational Excellence & Infrastructure Oversight

  • Leads the Infrastructure team to ensure properties are well maintained, and all building systems are functioning optimally.
  • Ensures housing operations meet regulatory standards, funder expectations, and best practices for tenant experience and asset performance.
  • Oversees building infrastructure initiatives including major repairs, capital projects, renovation planning, tendering processes, and contractor oversight.
  • Ensures timely response to operational risks, building issues, and critical incidents affecting service users or staff.


Asset Management, Data, and Systems

  • Strengthens asset management systems, documentation practices, and data reporting standards. 
  • Interprets housing, maintenance, and asset data to inform policy, funding proposals, strategic planning, and operational improvements.
  • Oversees insurance portfolio coordination and risk management frameworks.

 

Team Leadership & People Development

  • Provides strong, hands‑on leadership to a growing team of managers and staff.
  • Drives organizational change while supporting staff through transitions, growth, and evolving expectations.
  • Sets clear standards for documentation, communication, and project accountability.
  • Supports hiring, onboarding, and performance management in collaboration with the People & Culture team.
  • Establishes a psychologically safe workplace that supports continuous learning and professional development.

 

IAP, Founder & Community Partnerships

  • Communicates proactively with Interested/Affected Parties (IAPs) regarding building issues, project timelines, risk areas, and community developments.
  • Represents Connective at meetings, site visits, consultations, and community events to strengthen the organization’s profile.

 

Policy, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Develops and updates policies and procedures related to housing operations, asset management, safety, and maintenance standards.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant legislation, codes, insurance requirements, and funder obligations
  • Leads continuous improvement initiatives to enhance cost efficiency, asset longevity, tenant satisfaction, and operational consistency.
  • Conducts internal reviews, property evaluations, and readiness reviews in preparation for external audits or funder assessments.



WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works both independently and collaboratively as a member of the Director Group.
  • May be required to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, depending on operational needs. 



EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Required

  • A bachelor’s degree, diploma and/or trade certificate in a relevant discipline or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 7+ years of recent experience managing a large housing portfolio, building relationships, and systems thinking – private or non-profit experience welcome.
  • Proven leadership experience overseeing managers and guiding teams through organizational growth.
  • Strong technical knowledge of asset management, building systems, property operations, and capital planning.
  • Experience building relationships with external Interested/Affected Parties (IAPs) including funders, contractors, and regulators.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a high level of customer service.
  • Flexibility to travel across Connective’s regions as needed.
  • High proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite as well as experience working with other technologies and software.
  • Strong communication skills (listening, verbal, and written).

 

Preferred

  • Experience in a growing organization or one undergoing significant operational change.
  • Knowledge of the housing continuum (e.g., transitional housing, supportive housing, community‑based housing models).
  • Experience in non-profit or mission-driven environments.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records Check.
  • Ability to successfully pass a reference check.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

 


COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $98,900 to $123,600. Annual salary will be negotiated based on experience and qualifications. This role will also be eligible for Connective's comprehensive benefits package.


Important
: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.
