POSITION TITLE:    Archaeologist

DEPARTMENT:    Cultural Resources 

REPORTS TO:    Cultural Resources Director

STATUS:        Salary, fulltime 

SALARY RANGE:    $82,264.00 - $98,592.00 per year

Position Summary: 



Plans and coordinates cooperative field archaeology and cultural monitoring activities with federal, state, and local governments. Responds to requests for, and coordination of tribal consultation under certain historic preservation laws. Honors and represents the mission, vision, values of CIT and the Cultural Resources department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:




  • Assesses potential impacts to cultural resources by reviewing regional proposals, scoping requests, environmental assessments, archaeological reports, ethnographic information, and maps.

  • Maintains working knowledge of and reviews projects for compliance with all relevant federal, state, and Tribal regulations regarding historic preservation and cultural resource management.

  • Performs documentary and field research.

  • Writes responsive reports assessing impacts of proposed land use or development projects to cultural resources.

  • Reviews background data and mitigation requirements for project review and compliance.

  • Assists with planning, survey, excavation, and recording of subsurface features and artifacts.

  • Serves as cultural resources monitor during projects conducted by others.

  • Participates in the assessment and determination of sites for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Conducts CIT directed archaeological field surveys; authors associated technical reports with standard forms, photos, and maps created using ARC GIS.

  • Prepares artifacts for curation and assists with cultural research as needed.

  • Attends meetings on behalf of the department.

  • Maintains all records according to department standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of program files, historic documentation, and archival material.

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, tribal members and administrators, state and federal governments, contractors, public officials, and the general public.

  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.



 



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:




  • Knowledge of federal, state, local and tribal laws and regulations that govern historic preservation and environmental requirements.

  • Knowledge of tribal governments, Cowlitz Tribal history, and Cowlitz ethnographic landscape. 

  • Knowledge of archaeological field and laboratory research methods, reporting, and curatorial practices.

  • Ability to operate various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.

  • Ability to operate standard field equipment including GPS units, digital camera, compass, clinometers, and rangefinder.

  • Ability to read a topographic map, GPS data collection, create site records, and carry out other field mapping and data collection.

  • Ability to prepare cultural resource survey reports and site records.

  • Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports and present detailed, accurate, and objective oral presentations and responses to questions.

  • Ability to interpret, analyze, and enforce historic preservation regulations.

  • Ability to adhere to strict standards of professional responsibility and conduct.

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to community issues and concerns.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
