Job Description

About the Department

Under the general direction of the Director of Parks & Recreation or designee, the Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring and supervising designated swimming areas at City beaches and pools. This position ensures the safety of residents and guests by actively observing waterfront areas, enforcing safety rules and regulations and responding to emergencies, including performing water rescues when necessary. The role requires strong observational skills, sound judgment, emergency response capability, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Position Duties

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations, including performing water rescues and administering first aid when necessary.
  • Continuously monitor and scan assigned beach and pool areas to ensure the safety of all swimmers and visitors.
  • Enforce beach and pool policies, rules, and safety regulations in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Maintain appropriate dress and appearance in accordance with City of Stamford standards, including wearing the required lifeguard uniform, whistle, and rescue tube while on duty.
  • Attend and participate in required in-service training and safety drills.
  • Provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all residents and guests.
  • Complete incident and injury reports as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of lifeguarding principles, water safety practices, and rescue techniques.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures, including first aid, CPR, and AED use.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and safety procedures governing the use of public beaches and swimming pools.
  • General understanding of safe practices for maintaining a secure and orderly recreational environment.
  • Strong swimming and water rescue skills.
  • Skill in recognizing potential hazards and responding quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with the public and enforce rules in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Observation and attention-to-detail skills to monitor swimmers and identify unsafe
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods while monitoring swimming areas.
  • Ability to respond quickly, calmly, and effectively during emergencies.
  • Ability to follow established safety procedures and enforce rules consistently.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, and members of the public.
  • Ability to maintain composure and exercise sound judgment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.

Other Qualifications

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
  • Strong swimming ability and physical stamina.
  • Current Lifeguard Certification from the American Red Cross (ARC) or equivalent recognized certifying organization.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays during the summer season.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations.
