Adaptive Camp Counselor



Bretton Woods Recreation Center is seeking highly motivated, energetic, and responsible individuals to join our team as Adaptive Camp Counselors for the upcoming summer season. Adaptive Camp Counselors provide individualized support to campers with physical, emotional, behavioral, or neurodivergent needs, helping them fully and safely participate in all aspects of camp life. This role requires patience, empathy, flexibility, and a strong commitment to meeting campers where they are while fostering growth, confidence, and connection. Applicants for this position must be at least 18 years old.

Reports to: Summer Camp Directors



Supervises: None



Length of Employment: Summer camps run from June through August. Staff training will be held prior to the first week of camp. While this position is primarily seasonal, there may be additional opportunities for work in the Spring and Fall.



Essential Functions




  • Provide one-on-one or small-group support to campers with diverse physical, emotional, or neurodivergent needs

  • Adapt activities, routines, and communication styles to meet individual camper abilities and goals

  • Support campers with daily living tasks as needed (e.g., transitions, emotional regulation, personal care, mobility support)

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and positive environment that promotes inclusion and participation

  • Collaborate closely with fellow counselors, adaptive staff, and leadership

  • Model patience, empathy, and respectful behavior at all times

  • Respond calmly and appropriately to challenging behaviors or emotional moments using camp-approved strategies

  • Ensure the safety of campers at all times and maintain attendance

  • Maintain professional and positive interactions with parents during drop off and pick up

  • Complete additional tasks as assigned



Requirements




  • Strong communication skills and command of the English language

  • Ability to communicate efficiently with others whose first language may not be English

  • Ability to work collaboratively with campers, counselors, and camp directors

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, where change and improvement are always present

  • Reliable transportation to and from BWRC. Public transportation is not available

  • Must pass background checks provided by BWRC

  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred

  • Must have a positive attitude and report to work on time

  • Communicate with campers and parents in a courteous manner

  • Previous experience working in an adaptive environment preferred



Physical Demands and Work Environment




  • Walk and stand outside in hot, humid weather for extended periods of time




  • Continuous repetitive motions including bending, crouching, squatting, lifting, and carrying.

  • Comfortable in personal watercraft (tube, canoe, stand-up paddle board, and kayak).
