Pay Information:

Internal Hires: Step placement and rate of pay will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms. 

External Hires: Step placement and rate of pay will be determined based on relevant experience.

  • Medication History Technician 1 starts at $22.45 per hour.

  • Medication History Technician 2 starts at $26.56 per hour.

     

Job Summary:

Med History Tech 1:  Under supervision of a licensed pharmacist, obtains medication histories for patients being admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Department and other departments. Medication history information is obtained from the patient directly or the patient’s family, hospital records, retail pharmacy, or physician office. The technician enters the medication history into the electronic patient database; communicates completion of medication history to physician, nursing, and pharmacy staff; performs all duties in Pharmacy Tech 2 position; and assist higher levels complete other projects as assigned. 

The position is also assigned general Pharmacy Technician work: Aseptic I.V. preparation, proper storage, distribution, packaging, and labeling of medications, associated record keeping; and monitoring and reconciling hospital vaccine use and hospital medication usage reports.

Med History Tech 2:  Under supervision of a licensed pharmacist, obtains medication histories for patients being admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Department and other departments. Medication history information is obtained from the patient directly or the patient’s family, hospital records, retail pharmacy, or physician office. The technician enters the medication history into the electronic patient database; communicates completion of medication history to physician, nursing, and pharmacy staff; performs all duties in Pharmacy Tech 2 position; and assist higher levels complete other projects as assigned. 

The position is also assigned general Pharmacy Technician work: Aseptic I.V. preparation, proper storage, distribution, packaging, and labeling of medications, associated record keeping; and monitoring and reconciling hospital vaccine use and hospital medication usage reports. 

This position differs from the Medication History Technician 1 in that at this level the incumbent is able to perform and is responsible for the quality of Medication History data; assists with pharmacy projects requiring their advanced knowledge and technical skill; may fulfill a particular department role; and provides orientation, training, and support to Pharm Tech 1, 2, and 3s related to Medication History tasks and Pharmacy Technician work. Positions perform the functions of a Pharmacy Technician 2 when required.

Minimum Qualifications for the Job:

Med History Tech 1

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Experience: Six (6) months experience as a BRH Pharmacy Technician 1 or the equivalent at a medical center, clinic, or hospital.

    • Substitutions: One (1) year of retail experience in a Pharmacy that included documenting medication history or performing medication history research may substitute for the required experience. 

      • OR Medication History Certificate may substitute for the required experience.

  • License(s): Valid State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician License.

  • Certification(s): Pharmacy Technician at time of appointment (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board).

    • Note: Incumbent must obtain a Medication History Certification within one year of hire. (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board). *Not applicable to those who already hold an accredited certification from the PTCB.

Med History Tech 2

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Experience: One (1) year of Medication History Technician experience at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

    • Substitutions: An Advanced Pharmacy Technician Certificate may substitute for the required experience. 

      • OR Three (3) years of Pharmacy Technician experience that included medication history technician tasks may substitute for the required experience.

  • License(s): Valid State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician License.

  • Certification(s): Pharmacy Technician at time of appointment (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board). Medication History Certification at time of appointment.
