About the Department

The Public Affairs and Community Engagement (PACE) Division is seeking a seasonal Media Specialist to support the Department of Parks and Recreation’s communications and marketing efforts through strong writing, storytelling, and media support. This position plays a key role in sharing the Department’s impact, programs, and services with residents, partners, and stakeholders across Prince George’s County. 

The ideal candidate is a strong writer who understands how to translate government and community-focused work into clear, engaging, and accessible content that reflects the Department’s mission and brand.

Position Duties

Key Responsibilities
Writing & Editorial Content
• Write, edit, and proofread a wide range of materials including press releases, media advisories, feature stories, newsletters, website content, talking points, and social media copy
• Translate Department initiatives, programs, events, and policies into clear, compelling, and community-centered messaging
• Ensure consistency with Department branding, tone, and messaging standards.
Media & Public Affairs Support
• Assist with media outreach efforts, including drafting pitches and coordinating interviews
• Support preparation of press kits, media lists, and briefing materials
• Monitor and track media coverage related to Department initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications
• Strong writing and editing skills, with experience producing public-facing content
• Ability to write clearly for diverse audiences, including residents, media, and stakeholders
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
• Background in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field
• Experience working in government, parks and recreation, nonprofit, or community based organizations
• Familiarity with media relations and public-sector communications
• Knowledge of Communications and Marketing best practices and digital storytelling
