    COORDINATOR I, SPECIAL EDUCATION

     

    DESCRIPTION

    Under the general direction of the department administrator(s), the Coordinator I, Special Education, coordinates the implementation of policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures pertaining to District special education programs to enhance student learning and achievement.  Provides consultation, coaching, one-to-one and group presentations, classroom support, and instructional and behavioral strategies for regular educators, services to children and adolescents with disabilities, and supports parents in enhancing the educational effectiveness of the assigned program area and any other related functions as directed.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Credential

    Valid California Special Educational Teaching or Pupil Personnel Services Credential, authorizing service in School Psychology, and a valid California Administrative Services Credential.

    Education

    Master's Degree required; training in the broad aspects of school administration, with an emphasis on special education required 

    Experience

    Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in special education at the PK-12 level or service as a school psychologist, experience providing professional development required, strong oral and written communication skills required.  Out-of-classroom experience preferred.

     

    WORK YEAR

    Current work year is 210 work days, to be worked between July 1 and June 30.  

     

    SALARY SCHEDULE

    Placement on the Certificated Management Salary Schedule depending on education and experience.  The current seven-step salary range (including longevity) is from $117,306.07 to $135,655.26.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

    1. Works on the development and implementation of Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
    2. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of special education programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and district mandates.
    3. Provide consultation, technical assistance, and support to administrators, teachers, and parents regarding instructional practices, behavioral supports, student transitions, and program implementation.
    4. Facilitate and support Student Study Team (SST) processes, including case reviews and guidance on referrals for special education assessment, with attention to disproportionality.
    5. Coordinate and support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); participate in IEP meetings as needed, including as the administrative designee in complex or high-profile cases.
    6. Monitor caseloads, service delivery, and program effectiveness to ensure compliance and appropriate allocation of resources.
    7. Oversee recruitment, selection, placement, supervision, and evaluation (or support of evaluation) of classified, certificated, and contracted staff; ensure quality and compliance of agency services.
    8. Plan, coordinate, and deliver professional development for certificated and classified staff; collaborate with district teams to design training aligned with compliance and instructional best practices.
    9. Coordinate specialized programs and services (e.g., preschool, assessment teams, non-public schools, residential placements, related services) and facilitate access to instructional materials, resources, and equipment.
    10. Maintain current knowledge of laws and regulations related to special education; assist with complaint resolution, mediation, and due process proceedings as assigned.
    11. Serve as a liaison between district departments, school sites, families, and outside agencies; establish and maintain collaborative partnerships.
    12. Monitor legal and programmatic developments impacting special education and support implementation of required changes.
    13. Oversee documentation, reporting, and compliance requirements, including SMAA (School-Based Medi-Cal Administrative Activities).
    14. Prepare and maintain records and reports related to programs, services, budgets, and compliance.
    15. Supervise Extended School Year (ESY) programs.
    16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

    13. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and problem-solving skills.
    14. Oral and written proficiency in a second language preferred.

     

    SUPERVISION

    Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, Special Education.
