    The Head High School Boys Basketball Coach / High School Physical Education Teacher is responsible for leading, organizing, and supervising the high school basketball program in accordance with district goals, campus expectations, and University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules while also providing high-quality instruction in high school physical education.

    This dual role supports student academic achievement, physical development, character education, and competitive growth.

    Major Responsibilities and Coaching Duties

    Program Leadership

    • Develop, implement, and oversee all components of the high school basketball program.
    • Establish a positive program culture emphasizing discipline, teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship.
    • Ensure vertical alignment across varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams.
    • Collaborate with campus administration, athletic director, and feeder programs.
    • Represent the basketball program in a professional and positive manner.

    Coaching & Player Development

    • Plan and conduct organized practices focused on fundamentals, skill development, conditioning, and strategy.
    • Teach offensive and defensive systems appropriate to student-athlete skill levels.
    • Evaluate player performance and provide constructive feedback.
    • Promote physical fitness, injury prevention, and proper training techniques.
    • Foster leadership, confidence, and mental toughness among student-athletes.

    Student-Athlete Academic & Behavioral Support

    • Monitor academic eligibility and reinforce academic expectations.
    • Encourage positive conduct, discipline, and respect on and off the court.
    • Support student-athletes in balancing academics, athletics, and personal responsibilities.

    Staff Supervision

    • Assist in the selection, supervision, and evaluation of assistant coaches.
    • Assign coaching responsibilities and ensure consistency across staff.
    • Lead coaching meetings and promote professional growth.

    UIL Compliance & Safety

    • Ensure full compliance with UIL Constitution and Contest Rules.
    • Adhere to district athletic policies, procedures, and codes of conduct.
    • Maintain accurate eligibility records, physicals, and required documentation.
    • Enforce safety protocols during practices, competitions, and travel.

     

    High School Physical Education Teaching Responsibilities

    Instructional Planning & Delivery

    • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based physical education lessons aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
    • Develop lesson plans that promote physical fitness, motor skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness habits.
    • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and abilities.
    • Incorporate fitness assessments and track student progress.

    Classroom & Gym Management

    • Maintain a safe, structured, and positive learning environment in gymnasiums, weight rooms, and outdoor facilities.
    • Establish clear expectations for behavior, participation, and safety.
    • Supervise students at all times during physical activities and ensure proper use of equipment.

    Student Assessment & Support

    • Assess student performance using district grading policies.
    • Provide feedback to support student growth in fitness, skill development, and health knowledge.
    • Communicate student progress with parents and guardians as needed.

    Health & Safety

    • Promote injury prevention strategies and proper technique.
    • Ensure compliance with district safety guidelines and emergency procedures.
    • Monitor student health considerations and accommodations.

     

    Teacher / Coach Professional Responsibilities

    • Maintain valid Texas teaching certification and required coaching certifications.
    • Attend required professional development and district trainings.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to support campus initiatives.
    • Model professionalism, ethical conduct, and positive relationships with students and staff.
    • Coordinate instructional responsibilities with athletic commitments to ensure both roles are fulfilled effectively.

     

    Qualifications

    Education / Certification:

    • Bachelor's degree required
    • Valid Texas teaching certificate (Physical Education or appropriate certification)
    • UIL and district-required coaching certifications

    Experience:

    • Previous high school or competitive basketball coaching experience preferred
    • Experience teaching physical education preferred

    Knowledge & Skills:

    • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and strategies
    • Knowledge of physical education curriculum and TEKS
    • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
    • Ability to motivate and manage student-athletes
    • Commitment to ethical conduct and student development

    Physical & Work Requirements

    • Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate physical skills for extended periods
    • Ability to lift and transport athletic equipment
    • Ability to travel for games, tournaments, and district events
    • Evening, weekend, and holiday work required during athletic seasons

     

    *Salary is commensurate with experience
    *Minimum Salary $66,000
    *Works 202-day Contract
    * Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.
